Timeclock Lore
T&A, it's not always what you think!

Ask More From Your Time Clock

Is your time clock a slacker?

We have nothing against the time clock. In fact, Kronos invented the electronic time clock in 1979. And our 400-series terminal, released in 1993, quickly became the most popular time clock ever sold. So our roots are firmly entrenched in time clocks and time and attendance.

But time clocks are so 20th century. And we've entered the age of completely automated data collection devices and time and attendance processes. Touch-screen devices that can control access, provide additional security, verify employees with biometric technology, and give you the full power of workforce management.

Kronos data collection devices not only capture employee time transactions. Combined with our completely automated timekeeping, they help you control labor costs. Minimize compliance risk. And improve workforce productivity. These three benefits are at the core of simplified workforce management. And it all begins with a swipe of the badge.

...................

Kronos - Cronus. God of Time.

KRONOS (or Cronus) was the Titan god of time and the ages, especially time where regarded as destructive and all-devouring. He ruled the cosmos during the so-called Golden Age, after castrating and deposing his father Ouranos (the Sky). In fear of a prophecy that he would be in turn be overthrown by his own son, Kronos swallowed each of his children as soon as they were born. Rhea managed to save the youngest, Zeus, by hiding him away on the island of Krete, and fed Kronos a stone wrapped in the swaddling clothes of an infant. The god grew up, forced Kronos to disgorge his swallowed offspring, and led the Olympians in a ten year war against the Titanes, before driving them defeated into the pit of Tartaros.

Many human generations later, Zeus released Kronos and his brothers from this prison, and made the old Titan king of the Elysian Islands, home of the blessed dead. Kronos was essentially the same as Khronos, the primordial god of time in the Orphic Theogonies.

Time clock's history

No need for a them

At first payroll clocks were unneeded. People were paid a dollar a day and worked from sun-up to sun-down. In the summer people worked longer hours and in the winter shorter. Since the time worked was fixed at a day recording the hours worked was unnecessary.

The necessity

During the industrial revolution people started to work in factories. In a factory the work day is more fixed. More and more people were paid by the hour rather than by the day. With the shift to hourly wages came the need for timecards to keep track of when someone worked. A time clock protects the owner by making sure that each employee works the number of hours they said they did. Time clocks also protect the employees by providing an official version of the hours they worked on a timecard. This makes it harder for employers to cheat them out of wages.
Edison's clock
The photo on this page is of Edison's time clock. After Edison died the time he last clocked out was etched into the time clock, and later painted on. It now always reads 7:10 am.

Trivia:

In the first Matrix movie, people were shown lined up to punch in at a timeclock.

To those in the trade, to "punch someone out" doesn't mean a fist to the face. They say it without even flinching. "Will you punch me out?" is a common vernacular.

:sun:Ardhanarishvara | You died, and death was complete freedom from suffering - bliss. But it very quickly got lonely and repetitive in bliss, so you decided to be born once more. You've been doing this forever.

Whilst I may not agree with what you say, I will defend to the death my right to disagree with you.

Some say "think outside the box". I say "what fucking box?!" xx:taosmilie:

That's true, but in this case it's used to describe a clock that's used to record and pay for an employees time. That being said, we could digress to talk about any kind of clock here.

Ever notice the anagram of HORUS = HOURS?

Speaking of being "on the clock" I have to get ready for work. In the meantime.. here's a 10,000 year clock.

"Let the dot of light beckon you.."

The 10,000 Year Clock

There is a Clock ringing deep inside a mountain. It is a huge Clock, hundreds of feet tall, designed to tick for 10,000 years. Every once in a while the bells of this buried Clock play a melody. Each time the chimes ring, it’s a melody the Clock has never played before. The Clock’s chimes have been programmed to not repeat themselves for 10,000 years. Most times the Clock rings when a visitor has wound it, but the Clock hoards energy from a different source and occasionally it will ring itself when no one is around to hear it. It’s anyone’s guess how many beautiful songs will never be heard over the Clock’s 10 millennial lifespan.

The Clock is real. It is now being built inside a mountain in western Texas. This Clock is the first of many millennial Clocks the designers hope will be built around the world and throughout time. There is a second site for another Clock already purchased at the top of a mountain in eastern Nevada, a site surrounded by a very large grove of 5,000-year-old bristlecone pines. Appropriately, bristlecone pines are among the longest-lived organisms on the planet. The designers of the Clock in Texas expect its chimes will keep ringing twice as long as the oldest 5 millennia-old bristlecone pine. Ten thousand years is about the age of civilization, so a 10K-year Clock would measure out a future of civilization equal to its past. That assumes we are in the middle of whatever journey we are on – an implicit statement of optimism.

Time is a funny thing. Time is a very peculiar item. You see when you're young, you're a kid, you got time, you got nothing but time. Throw away a couple of years, a couple of years there... it doesn't matter. You know. The older you get you say, "Jesus, how much I got? I got thirty-five summers left." Think about it. Thirty-five summers.

Ha! That reminds me of when my mom used to say .."Think about it, you've only been around 13 summers.. just 13 little summers is all!" whenever we wanted to do something she didn't want us to do.
