Going on a 2-week rafting trip through the Grand Canyon,...

I agree with you OP on "moments in time" stuff. Photos are nice, but be sure to personally experience the surroundings - don't hide behind a camera.

Also - WATER WATER WATER WATER... did I mention water?

Unfortunately hundreds of tourists find themselves in trouble out west by not having enough water. it may not FEEL hot in the shade, even in 120 degree weather, because of the 0% humidity, and you don't sweat, so dehydration comes on sudden and hard.

Other than that, have fun. If you are going with a tour group they should be able to make sure you are all safe and sound.

If you tromp over to Sedona, and like to go off roading (no tour guide), stop at Sedona ATV and Buggy [link to www.atvsedona.com]

great people, good prices for the area, great equipment, and they make sure you have everything you need!

Anyway.. have a blast .. and I repeat - WATER.

Anybody been there done that and got some skinny on interesting things to see while I'm roasting down there??

I just finished reading Mississippi by Raft. Awesome. Out of11 young men 8 of them died. You ca read it in 2 days. Bring a gun!

If you do end up at Havasupai, the only place they don't want you taking a picture is at the cemetery. They ask you don't take their pics unless you ask first but everything else is a-okay.

Hey did this same tour once. Bring LOTS of water. Canyon gets very very hot! Never leave your group, we had one who walked off for potty break lost them for four hours. When we found him he was almost fully dehydrated. I can't stress water enough. It's very hot. Wish you an awesome trip it is so much fun. Oh also in the beginning take the donkey down we walked and the 7 or 8 miles became brutal. The canyon has it's own climate down inside, the lower you go the hotter it gets.

Idk man but I just got back from Aruba and I love traveling and getting away from it all!! Wow rafting in grand canyon takes some guts. Have fun man!!

Take a hat, preferably wide brim, something crush proof... or at least a baseball cap. The guides might let you take off the helmet through the non-rapid sections and you'll be glad to have it. Useful on the side canyon hikes too assuming they catch some sun. Only desert rookies go without. Read John Wesley Powell's "The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons" before you go, if you get a chance.

A thought you may not have had OP. When the rafts go to shore, be especially careful going off from around the cleared areas, as there are more rattlesnakes than you can shake a stick at. Would be a bummer to have to end your trip because of snake bite. Good luck to ya!

This is a huge problem you have all these old out of shape people that the last time they spend a day camping was in their made up girl scout cookie tent.

Now they are old and want "adventure" Yet have no outdoor skills and are in an A/C office all day long getting fat, Guess what happens? they break bones and are hauled out like free willy, while being splashed water and ice because they can't deal with the environment.


If you are an outdoresman more power to ya but if you are not do us a favor cancel the trip and go rent a cycle paddle boat with an umbrella at your local park pond

Don't forget to relocate the ancient lost cave city that we haven't heard about for a century.
