Re: Kill Wasps with Dish Soap and Water
I've been using a combination of citrus oils and concentrated mint to repel wasps, ants,etc..for several yrs and spray it any place they might nest,,works very well. For mosquito repellent I pick some fresh mint like lemon balm, peppermint, spearmint, pennyroyal and just rub it on my skin..then tuck some in my pockets..works great..

Also works well for pets...except never use the pennyroyal on pregnant animals..Pennyroyal is best for repelling fleas, they will literally race off an animal treated with it.

wasps may serve a purpose and I would only kill them if they were stinging my loved ones

You would actually wait for them to sting first? Wasps in South Florida sting for no reason and hurt like a bitch. Judging by the number of bugs around here I'd say their doing a crappy job of population control so I have no use for them. Nothing personal.

Ha. I didn't notice that. Yeah, you don't wait for the wasps to strike first. Gotta go all George Dubya on their asses and pre-empt.

Was at a gas station. Opened the gas cover. Stuck my hand in, unscrewed the gas cap, pulled my hand out. And to my bewilderment, my hand is covered with angry stinging wasps. Of all fucking things...

Well to make a long story short, this stuff drops them to the ground immediately. As they laid there struggling, they met with the bottom of my shoe. (Yeah, it was personal.)

Be sure to periodically check up inside your vehicle's gas cap area with a flashlight. Don't find out the hard way like I did.

Re: Kill Wasps with Dish Soap and Water
There is a type of wasp/hornet here in Ca. that locals call Meat Bees. I like to call them Hummer Bees because when they are immature they make a pleasant humming sound..and are mild mannered without stingers, nor do they bite. When in the immature stage of life they do the work of bees very successfully.

However as they mature they develop stingers and very strong mouth parts, like yellow jackets..which they resemble in color, but not in shape as they remain bee-like.

Once they are mature they feed on carrion and are very aggressive, much more then any other wasps or hornets.Even their hum sounds very wound up. Very unwelcome guests at BBQ's, and they will attack for water at leaky faucets if you get in their way.

After watering a hive hidden in the ground, they make a paper nest like hornets, I found myself running and covered in them one summer. Pretty amazing as I had been unable to run for almost a decade with my M.S.

Takes a wk or 2 for the effects of a meat bee sting or bite to wear off. Was not an extreme reaction that I had however painful.. I started trapping them..which attracted even more.

However as a result of the 30 to 40 stings, I became very sensitive to the medication I was taking..which lead to my detoxing from it..which lead to the start of my recovery..as I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, which triggered an auto-immune reaction and M.S..

Finally after a few yrs I realized that without the Meat Bee attack,I might still be taking medication and reacting to them severely with M.S. symptoms.

So as I regained my mobility I began to clear out my property.. Removed stumps and rotting down trees where these Meat bees tend to nest..filled in holes with wood ash..And started to find natural methods to repel them..Instead of using toxic chemicals..that bring M.S. symptoms and worse for me.

I also had imaginary talks with the Meat Bee Group consciousness..and asked them to not nest here.

They don't nest here anymore, but the young gentle hummer bees were here again this Spring to visit my berries, flowers and fruit trees.

Still working on learning to run, might have to find me a nest of meat bees to inspire me.

I've killed off a few wasp nests in my time...

Bees and wasps travel in relatively straight lines. Watch a few of them and you will get an idea where they originate from. Follow that line and you will find their nest - usually in a small hole. Wait till sundown then poor petrol into the hole and block it up. The fumes will kill them. Job done.
Take your dogma and shove it!

Life is not about what happens to you, it's about how you deal with it.

Any ideas on how to get rid of yellow jackets that live in the walls? Not keen on spraying a bunch of poison because the wall they live in is the one in the kitchen.

Re: Kill Wasps with Dish Soap and Water
Any wasp whisperers here? Moved to new home 8 years ago, fairly new development that had been undisturbed scrub brush for 50 years. The mud wasps and paper wasps will not leave our house alone. Been battling them constantly, they build in the stupid places like right by doors, in busy places, the same places over and over. The mud ones are especially aggressive and will dive bomb if you are near their nest. The black wasps in the paper nests are also a problem. Also have Tons of bees that I love and work right along beside in my garden, all organic and do everything I can to keep those. Have asked neighbors and they all claim to not have any problem at all. Seems like only our house. Why don't they leave our house alone?

All God's creatures serve a purpose.

But I don't want all of them living with me.

Long story, but my condo bldg gets sewer roaches (american cockroaches).

Does anyone know if detergent or scented oils could kill/deter them?

Must be a different type of wasp. I have the mud type and I've never had any problems with them. They eat other bugs so I let them live.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18918191

Those are mud-daubbers and they aren't a problem, except for mud nests everywhere.
If you have Red Wasps or Yellow jackets, you are in a dangerous situation. Both of them like to sting, and it hurts like hell. Red Wasps are the worst. It hurts for days.
