Coons are awesome as long as you show them them respect. Quoting: Nine's That dropped your thread score from awesome, to nice. LOL. Seriously, thanks to you and everyone who's commented for caring for the critters. aw, i said it toungue in cheek. i guess you missed my heavy participation in the raccoon story thread last month...i love 'em. but they aren't so smart about stuff like water, i've seen them tip over the cat water again and again trying to get a drink but it just runs off the porch. they are SILLY! i grew up in the country with lots of animals. :) your participation has been really good, thank you, nine's. :) LOL. I know you were being tongue in cheek, that's why I could tease you about it. They actually are smart about water. Chances are, they aren't trying to get a drink from your cat water. They're trying to pee in the dish. They are kind of picky about how they line up just right to use their water for a potty, but watch them with that thought in mind. If they really want a drink, they're quite good with the water until they get a drink. Then, game on. They're funny as can be playing in a kiddie pool. I loves me some coons. |

I never hit water!! I live in northern Illinois and its getting bad here... Quoting: never96 do you have a big bucket or wash basin (that stainless steel one) or something, and place it far enough away from the house they feel safe getting to it? i am absolutely hoping there are no new fires. I would only be able to carry two 5 gallon buckets to where they would drink it! The raccoon's would probably just tip them over. We need to get rain!!! If you can dig a hole a third of the way up the bucket, then set the bucket in the hole, it's not likely a coon would tip it. If you dig the hole half way up the bucket, it's extremely unlikely anything would tip it. Those little kiddie pools work nice too. Good idea!! |

The hotter ocean temperatures have driven anchovies and other fish deeper into the sea, out of reach for some young birds trying to capture the fish. Scientists in Peru are also studying the deaths of dolphins and porpoises from early February to mid-April, but have found no conclusive results. They said that their inability to find the cause was due in part to the government’s slowness during investigations. Quoting: AC 1560850 Re: Banana goop. Don't throw away ripe banana's. Peel them and place them inside a plastic bag. Smash them, but leave a few chunks. Scoop out the banana's and smear them on the trunk of a tree. You will not believe the butterflies, bees and hummingbirds that will flock to this delicious and easily digested "nectar." Sure, the ants will come, but they clean up after the other creatures. Re: Mud pie. Scoop up a mound of soil and wet it. Spread it out like a pie. Butterflies love a wet mud pie on a hot day. You might want to do this at the far corner of the yard. You can also do it with sand. Just keep it moist, and the little creatures will land and cool "their jets" before take off. Thanks to everyone who has given them water, food and a safe place to hide from predators. I have a small group of small birds that one day out of the blue about 2 months ago I started feeding them. 2-3 times throughout the day. Just using bread. Also some squirrels too. One of which I think is half blind. Keeps running up to and near me, then realizes he is either under me or next to me then darts off. it started off by feeding one bird. Then watch as the one bird kept taking food back to its nest and heard its babies. Now I am feeding a whole family and then some. And they now know me. They come swooping down every time I come out. OR... if I make a whistle sound as I just did it each time I came out. I sometimes have to put the food in random places because of the traffic in our big back lot. Momma Bird is getting smarter, now goes to where I point. I was placing water out there in a bowl, but never saw them drink it. But was empty the next day. Think the squirrels got to it. Tried using like store bought bird seeds with an assortment of stuff in it. They kept running to leaves thinking it was bread. So nixed that idea. Trying to get them closer, but they are small skittish ones. But they love to come near me and sing, so. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1432653 United States 07/06/2012 10:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If you have pond, small lake please check out the pH which should be between 6.5 - 9. One can find your needs at tropical fish store. One can help clean-up that with baking soda. Clean straw in the water will help clear-up muddy water using one bale or more to the acre. If your water is out of whack use fine peat moss to bring it down in pH, or as clean way to balance the water. Use 1/4 - 1/2 bale per water acre. Also, we now have fair amount of wild turkeys around. Buy up some natural pebble rocks, size of pea. put in small piles to help them with their digestive system. Throw in few hand-fuls of natural wheat to this, then mix it. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19269218 so dont worry about your birds there will be plenty of resources to go round for the rest once we have dealt with this pest. There have been many areas in the US that have run programs to eradicate the European Starling here as they are considered to be an Invasive Species and damaging to native species found here. I imagine the starling encroaches upon your woodpecker population as they do here and they will often evict a woodpecker from the home they created in a tree. The larger common woodpeckers such as Red-bellied Woodpecker can hold its own however, the smaller ones are easily driven out of their nests. We have the Brown-headed Cowbird, which is a parasitic bird in that it lays their eggs in other bird’s nests for the other bird to raise. It takes a toll on the forced adoptive parent, as usually the Cowbird is considerably larger than the bird raising it. |
