Re: Help the Birds and Animals in this HEAT!!!! Bees and Butterflies too!
YW. Thanks for thinking of the critters. I hate hearing and reading about dogs and cats dying from neglect. In some cases it's probably easy to find some compassion for the owner, but the majority just plain make me mad. Like leaving them in the car "for just a minute" and not worry about them because "the windows were cracked". Sometimes it's hard to know if people are heartless, or ignorant.

Was reading tonight about a woman who ran a rescue operation and she had dead dobermans in cages in her house that had been there for quite a while. There were pictures of some of the survivors and it was hideous. They were walking bones. Bad enough that anyone could allow it to happen, but a rescue? Can you imagine someone having to part with their pet because of the economy, maybe homeless and they couldn't afford to feed it and sent it to rescue hoping it would have better care, then find what happened to them?

Ashamed to admit I haven't kept up on the El Nino forecast. Is the forecast hot and dry? I see you had a farm report thread. Haven't read it yet but am going to. Won't get into it on this thread, but there's a dire situation brewing out there.

the show about bad ass bikers rescuing animals. LOVED IT!!! i'll take just one, please. ;)

the farm report thread is really good, a lot of farmers spoke up and all the topics were discussed well. be sure to watch the 'farming and i grow it' video. :P

dire situation: see farm report thread, run the link video (original post) in the background and listen to what the official report said. i'm going to go into that again and see what is up for this week.

i believe people are going to be forced to move north. i am there now but may have to all go further, canada, i don't know. climate change has always put people on the move. that is how tribes appeared all over the world. tandym and others see northward movement, with intuitive insight. i do not see the southern hemisphere being a sustainable place much longer. i am doing what i can to keep up, we're in very intense times and i never would have thought it was going to get THIS bad. and getting worse. not to be a pessimist, but. all forecasts both scientific and intuitive say that NO models of possible futures come out looking good for the earth and humanity.

i also believe that THAT is exactly what the 'dimensional shift, spiritual vibration' hoo ha is really about: re-learning community, re-learning to care for the birds and bees, being able to let go of material possessions and former luxuries...all 'spiritual' attributes. we will be forced to face ourselves, and those who can trust and do what is needed will be the ones who survive. survival will depend on carrying forth with a new consciousness, i do not think that we can solve the problems we are facing and will face with the same solutions; the die-hard team america bug-outs, or the gangs and looters (etc.). these problems have been awaiting a different solution for a very long time, and the point of no return came and went like a meteor in the night.

i do NOT think that this consciousness shift is what most who await it are going to expect. it is going to force the whole new age mindset to truly look at itself, and i will be so glad, because at this point in my life if i hear another platitude i am going to scream. ;)

el nino stuff in this thread and farm report thread.

Aww, wow, the first part of the rescue link was nice. I saved the last part of the rescue link once it got down to some cases, to read tomorrow.

This is a great post!

Good thread!!! Thank you to all of the Animal lovers!!!

I leave trays of water out every day, and I use a big round metal fire pit tray as a watering trough. The Animals LOVE it! The Raccoons come at night to use it, as well as a couple of Opossums, and even the occasional Owl. During the day, Squirrels, Lizards, all kinds of Birds and any other stray animals use it to quench their thirst.

Insects need water too, and we make sure that there is plenty around for them too. We even make sure the Slugs stay moist and watered.

We get lots of Butterflies, and we give them sugar water. For some odd reason, Butterflies are attracted to me, and I have many times fed them sugar water from my hands. It is sooo cute seeing them unfurl and stick out their straw like tongue to suck the water, then fly off once they get their fill.

There is a Yellow Jacket Wasp that comes almost every time I change the water. He buzzes around me all curious, but has never stung me. He must realize somehow that I am the person who provides clean water, so he leaves me alone, then as soon as I am done, he swoops down for a drink. Even the smallest of Animals and Insects are fun to watch, and knowing that I am helping them out makes me feel good. I even make sure to rescue any insects who get caught in the water.

Instead of throwing away old fruit, I throw it in the yard, and it is always gone. The wildlife appreciate it.

I am happy to know that there are others who cares for even the smallest of creatures!

"The feared El Nino weather phenomenon could strike as early as the third quarter of 2012, raising prospects of wreaking weather havoc from North and South America to Asia, the U.S. Climate Prediction Center (CPC) said on Thursday.

“Overall, the forecaster consensus reflects increased chances for El Nino beginning in July-September 2012,” the agency said in a monthly update."

"Apart from the energy sector, global food production could also suffer massive disruptions from the warming caused by El Nino."

"Further ahead to the end of the year, the pattern could trigger severe winter storms during the northern hemisphere’s winter, particularly in California and other Western U.S. states."

i'm reading in other threads about birds dying, and i want to ask GLP'ers to do one tiny thing.

please, it is a simple thing that can help and/or save them.

PUT WATER OUT! please try to put the water in the shade and give it enough space from home that the wild ones feel comfortable.

edit to add butterfly advice at top of thread:

Just finished putting out "banana goop" and made a mud pie.

Re: Banana goop. Don't throw away ripe banana's. Peel them and place them inside a plastic bag. Smash them, but leave a few chunks. Scoop out the banana's and smear them on the trunk of a tree. You will not believe the butterflies, bees and hummingbirds that will flock to this delicious and easily digested "nectar." Sure, the ants will come, but they clean up after the other creatures.

Re: Mud pie. Scoop up a mound of soil and wet it. Spread it out like a pie. Butterflies love a wet mud pie on a hot day. You might want to do this at the far corner of the yard. You can also do it with sand. Just keep it moist, and the little creatures will land and cool "their jets" before take off.

Thanks to everyone who has given them water, food and a safe place to hide from predators.

Just this morning I found a baby bird on the ground, bald and eyes still closed. Ants were just starting to swarm on it right when I found it. I ran inside and grabbed some toilet paper, tweezers, and a big plastic cooking spoon. I gently scooped it into the spoon and carefully got all of the ants off of it. There were only about 5 or 6 of them, but I don't think that's good for such a small newborn. I found the nest it fell from, where 2 other baby birds were, and I placed it back. I made sure it was placed well enough where it wouldn't fall out again. I did this because I read online it's the best thing to do. The whole birds reject babies touched by humans is a myth. Birds can barely smell. Well, an hour or so later I came out to see if the mother bird was around. Sadly, I saw the same baby bird on the ground again, and it was dead. I guess it either fell again, the mother rejected it because it was injured from the first fall or the ant bites. I really tried my best to help it, but it didn't work out. I still feel bad about it, because I'm thinking maybe I could have saved it if I had done something differently or sooner. I live by a small creek where geese and ducks hang out, so there's plenty of water around. It was over 100 degrees here today with the heat index. I really tried my best. RIP baby bird.

that's sad. :( it's just wee birdies. kindness to those who cannot help themselves is a virtue. who is responsible for these anomalies, raging storms, drought...? a little tub of water for critters is the least we can do.

also think about insects and bees...don't we already have enough of a bee issue?

You know, this post was very kind of you! I thought about the birds myself yesterday and today, I noticed there were not as many out as usual...I thought they must be suffering too...my car today when I left work in Maryland with no air conditioning in my business told me it was 107 outside where I was at!!! What is going on, this weather is insane! I think this is a great post and thank you so much for posting it. I now know many different ways to give the poor suffering wild animals water!

I live in the Northeast. Several years ago I became frustrated during the winter because the large water dish I set out for the birds would freeze over. It was sad to see the birds trying to chip through the ice for water. I was constantly tossing the ice and starting over again.

So I went online and bought one of these bowls. It is wonderful in the winter and summer. (Certainly I don't plug it in during the summer.) It holds 1 1/2 gallons of water. Birds, rabbits, squirrels, and chipmunks drink from it. I have a brick next to it so the smallest critters could reach it.

Great thread OP! This is important to offer wildlife relief however you can.

Yes to the birdbath!

I blast out old water replacing with clean water every day (so they don't pass along bird diseases). It gets rank pretty fast.

Then around 5 pm if it's really hot I'll turn the sprinkler on low so the water goes out only 3 1/2 ft or so.
They like to stand under it and fluff their wings...the bigger birds tend to hog the birdbath.
cheers
 Quoting: DawaSatso

I put the sprinkler on also, not only for my shallow rooted rhododendrons and river birch trees, but for the backyard critters, too! lol I watched a rabbit stand under it today and the birds always like to "shower," of course. The butterflies fly to it also. I noticed that the bird bath is being used almost constantly during this hot weather. Tomorrow the heat index will be 110 here.

Funny you should say this, because I had watered one of our trees earlier and while I was pouring the water I could hear the birds chirping and the squirrels chattering. Im glad it made a big enough 'puddle/pool' to hydrate in. I think I'll do the same thing tomorrow; thanks. O:P

Re: Help the Birds and Animals in this HEAT!!!! Bees and Butterflies too!
i live on a 60 acre lake here in ft laud and i put a bird feeder up and nothing touched it for a couple months and then this little black bird with red on his wings started coming and then all hell broke loose.

other birds started hanging out and then the muscovie ducks showed up and i had to take it down because they will shit all over the sidewalk and when they eat somewhere, they will never leave.

God Bless you.

OMG seen like that it really hits home how bad this weather has been, I always put fresh water out in my yard for all the little creatures (exceptin' skeeters).

My yard is full of butter fly plants, the butter flies have really been all over them, as well as humming birds. I have a fish pond that all critters love. I do fill a shallow bird bath with water for the smaller critters as it is hard for the smaller ones to get water. GOD will bless you for remembering, doing it for them is like doing it for the LORD.
If you break my wings, I will just find a cloud and learn to fly again. The Lord will catch you when you fall or teach you to fly! May the footprints I leave lead you to BELIEVE.

wow, that's surprising! Been a normal to cold summer here so far... What weather anomaly is causing the heatwave all over the US?

Weather's getting more extreme everywhere each year; thunderstorms here in Europe been more severe and common than other years.

But good thread! Real Buddhistic to help out ALL life like this! Everybody in hot weather, DO THIS!!

Re: Help the Birds and Animals in this HEAT!!!! Bees and Butterflies too!
i'm reading in other threads about birds dying, and i want to ask GLP'ers to do one tiny thing.

please, it is a simple thing that can help and/or save them.

PUT WATER OUT! please try to put the water in the shade and give it enough space from home that the wild ones feel comfortable.

Love to you, Anne. You're a wonderful person.

Freese ice blocks in orange juice cartons. Pop them out in shallow containers. They'll melt slowly and provide cold water for hours.

I bought 3 angel food cake pans at a thrift store. I drove a stake down inside the tube part so they don't tip over. The little birds land on the rim of the pans and drink their fill.

Don't forget food. Rye bread and other high calorie items. They need salt, so buy the salted sunflower seeds.

Hey! Bird haters, without the birds, certain species of plants would be extinct.

Just make sure you change the water daily to avoid breeding insects or waterborne diseases.
