And during the 1918 flu pandemic the people who smoked did NOT get infected and die like the nonsmokers. It was attributed that the smoke irritated the lungs enough to build up a mucous membrane on the lining of the lungs which prevented the virus from attaching itself and causing sickness and death......Tobacco itself doesn't cause cancer but all of the chemicals they spray them with probably do!

I agree, smoking does not cause lung cancer. But what about COPD? Emphysema? Cardiovascular disease? Too bad it doesn't protect against that! Would be nice if smoking cigs was a harmless thing to do. Just sharin'...

Did you know the radiation from that cell phone you are holding in your avatar has been linked to cancer? In fact, the World Health Organization now lists mobile phone use in the same "carcinogenic hazard" category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform. But I bet you won't give that up just because there are known health risks. We all have our vices.

There are very few things in this world that are healthy for us anymore so I say SMOKE 'EM IF YOU'VE GOT 'EM! We all gotta die somehow (incidentally my great-grandfather smoked a pack a day and lived to be 102 so I've got good genes on my side! lol)

Re: Smoking Helps PROTECT Against Lung Cancer
Have been smoking a pipe since 1983. I smoke only pure homegrown tobacco. Over the years, doctors have performed lung capacity test on me, and have yet to discover a problem. My lung capacity has not changed since it was baselined years ago while in the military. Although I am not a runner, my last timed mile run was completed in 6 min, 22seconds. Not bad for an old fart!

My theory is the tobacco is not the problem in dealing with smoking related illness, the problem is the burning paper and the synthetic fiber filter. Modern cigarette tobacco is a loaded cocktail of additives and fillers, so there may be a connect there. Cigarette smoking makes my heart race, head hurt, and blood pressure skyrocket, my pipe... Never a problem.BTW, I do inhale my pipe, love it!

Something to add...

Awhile back, I found myself running out of my normal pipe weed. I removed some tobacco from a modern cigarette and smoked it in the pipe, although it was a nasty tasting smoke, I had no other physical effects.

Look, anyone that smokes knows it is bad for you. Smokers do not need to come up with justifications. If you want to smoke and enjoy it then fill yer boots. If not then don't, it is not complicated. Tobacco is also known to be very good at absorbing and storing radioactive particles, so keep that in mind as well.

Somebody recently suggested that it's the fiberglass in the filters that causes the cancer. You inhale little pieces of fiberglass and eventualy they cause cancer similar to asbestosis.

I don't know if I buy it, I don't know if I don't. I think it's possible.

I'd be willing to consider that. I just don't know how much physical dammage is actualy done. From what I hear there are only two ways a coroner can tell you smoked when he looks at your dead body:

1. You have nicotene stains on your fingertips.
2. You have a pack of cigarettes in your pocket.

Other than that your lungs look no different than a non-smoker's lungs. That business about having black shit in your lungs is a myth. It was never true. That came from an old American Lung Association poster campaign in the 1970's where they took a photo of a lung they took out of a coal miner who died of black lung disease. I remember seeing it as a kid. It looked like a chunk of charcoal. The ALA claimed it was the lung of a smoker, and it probably was. However they neglected to mention the fact that the guy died of black lung from breathing coal dust for 30 or 40 years; not lung cancer.

Whenever somebody bullshits me like that, that badly, it makes me wonder what the truth is.

36 hours into my quit. Might be something to this article as my lungs hurt bad.

*I know it is nerve endings actually growing back.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19565086

It could actually be lung cancer. I read that a big percentage of smokers who quit develop lung cancer within 2 years of giving up especially long term heavy smokers who quit cold turkey.

Makes sense really cause die hard alcoholics and heroin addicts have adverse health effects and even die if they give up totally.

I'm sure you could find more info on google.....

Re: Smoking Helps PROTECT Against Lung Cancer
From an early age I vowed never to smoke. I stood daily in horror by the bedside of an intensive care unit at 9 years old watching my grandmother hooked to a respirator while she expired in the worst of ways for two months on life support after a prolonged battle with lung cancer.

I have watched my father die a painful miserable cancer death attributable to cigarettes, he began as a young teen as did my mother who died of horrific lung disease two years later, they were both 74 and there is no question in my mind their lifetime addiction to tobacco was the culprit. My father toyed for years with the idea that smoking doesn't kill you, but in the end conceded most regretfully taken before his time.

Don't fool yourself or be deluded by others propaganda, SMOKING KILLS YOU, bottom line quit or you will die an awful painful most likely early death.........

Very good article....thanks, OP!

Agreed, that is really Draconian that a government
that is complicit with the Nuclear Energy Corporations
twist the truth. They do NOT want the public to be
aware of how many 1,000s of atomic bombs have been
detonated world-wide since the 1940 and how toxic it
is to the common people. Oh no...they would rather
spin a dream-doctor that gives us a counterfit source.

I met my husband in 1998 when I was having alot of
trouble with my asthyma. What I am telling you here is
the gospel truth....I had an attack one day and my
husband--who smokes Camel unfiltered and has for decades
with no health problems--handed me his lit cigarette and
said: "See of that helps!"
I laughed between my gasping coughs...but I took a drag.
It only took about 2 or 3 drags before my attack stopped
completely. I was on inhalers (which are really damaging to the lungs and turn them to tissue-paper) and within a couple of weeks totally threw the inhalers away. That
was 14 years ago. I smoke maybe 3 cigarettes a day and have no breathing problems at all.
I think the cigarette misinformation is just exactly like so many others we have caught the bastards doing to the public...asparatame/Nutra Sweet comes to mind. Thank you for bringing this up, OP. I'm going to have a cig now!

My mother had open heart surgery before she died from her lung disease, the surgeon who did the operation came out midway to tell us he didn't think she would survive as her lungs were the most visible darkened and damaged lungs he had ever seen, she had quit 20 years before her death.

It is not a myth lungs turn dark from smoking, it is however a myth that quitting completely heals them. But it's a much better option for extending ones life he said he was sure she would have died much sooner had she not stopped when she did.
