Fires in Siberia: The Whole Country Is Burning
The earth is hotter than it's ever been and it's getting hotter, and a big part of the reason is our bone-deep jones for fossil fuels. We may already be past the point where we can do anything but minimize the damage and try not to immolate ourselves. Willard Romney went before the NAACP today and talked about the great blessings that will descend upon the land if we start carting tar-sands oil, the dirtiest energy source in the history of the world, down through the middle of the country. He is a fool.

The fires in Siberia appear to be utterly out of control. Although that is kind of a nice picture from space up there.

Smoke from Siberia fire pushes BC ozone levels to new heights

Smoke lingering over much of British Columbia from Siberian wildfires has pushed ozone levels in parts of the province to never-before-seen numbers.

By Monday, ozone levels reached 84 parts per billion in the central Interior region, about three times the average for July. B.C.

Ministry of Environment air-quality meteorologist Eric Taylor said that on Sunday and Monday, levels were above 82 parts per billion, causing concerns because of potential health effects for people with respiratory problems, for example. He said that in the past seven years, levels have only exceeded 82 parts per billion for a total of three hours.

Thread: Hazy skies in Puget Sound trace back to big fires in Siberia

Thread: It's a small world after all... Siberia fires affect N BC (Canada) air quality

anyway the reason i posted it now is because tonight we are supposed to have a spectacular purple sunset due to the smoke from siberia.

I wonder how much CO2 burning forests add to the atmosphere?

Gas from pollutants, forest fires at potentially toxic levels
Posted on July 17, 2012 by Editor | Leave a comment

Forest fires and emission of air pollutants, which include fumes from vehicles running on diesel and slow burning of coal and charcoal, release isocyanic acid in the troposphere.

In 2011, scientists first detected isocyanic acid in the ambient atmosphere at levels that are toxic to human populations; at concentrations exceeding 1 parts-per-billion by volume (ppbv), human beings could experience tissue decay when exposed to the toxin.

Blog Entry DARPA Creates Machine Which Extinguishes Fires With Sound Jul 17, '12 12:52 AM
for everyone

"The team arranged two speakers either side of a liquid fuel flame to demonstrate how fire can be controlled by amping up an acoustic field. The sound increases air velocity, which then thins the area of the flame where combustion occurs, known as the flame boundary. Once the boundary area is thinned, the flame is easier to extinguish. "

Guys, people can hardly breather, the government has issued a warning for people to acquire and wear gas masks, but there is no place to get these things. inside is too stuffy, outside is hard to breather... People are having heart issues, breathing issues... It's not just about the sunset, people are suffering this very minute.. planes are not flying. visibility even on ground level is horrible.. please be aware.. and while we think about the impact this will have in the future on our air quality and ozone layer, let's take a moment to think about the people who are affected by it right now please...

Do you know that in Canada (for example) there is a whole Ecosystem totally dependent on the occurrence of forest fires. It is a natural thing.

As for the author of that (strongly political) guilt-trip and pious rhetoric being made from Russia's current fires; please stop spouting such utter crap!
