Ice Melts in Greenland July 8-12: 97% IN FOUR DAYS. read it and weep.
Extent of surface melt over Greenland’s ice sheet on July 8 (left) and July 12 (right). Measurements from three satellites showed that on July 8, about 40 percent of the ice sheet had undergone thawing at or near the surface. In just a few days, the melting had dramatically accelerated and an estimated 97 percent of the ice sheet surface had thawed by July 12. In the image, the areas classified as “probable melt” (light pink) correspond to those sites where at least one satellite detected surface melting. The areas classified as “melt” (dark pink) correspond to sites where two or three satellites detected surface melting. The satellites are measuring different physical properties at different scales and are passing over Greenland at different times. As a whole, they provide a picture of an extreme melt event about which scientists are very confident. Credit: Nicolo E. DiGirolamo, SSAI/NASA GSFC, and Jesse Allen, NASA Earth Observatory

just noticed someone else covered this earlier today:

SHOCKING.

look at the map.

reading the other threads. a couple comments stick out, like, 'check this winter's ice cap size, bigger than normal' (which i will do) and 'if greenlands ice melts we gain 27 feet of sea level globally.'

would really like someone to explain to me how global warming is a myth. i don't get it, never did, never really plugged into the global warming thing....just paying attention.

One area of critical concern are the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica which if fully melted would raise sea level by 64m. In the case of Greenland, loss of between 50 and 100 billion tons of ice has taken place annually over the period 1993-2003 with evidence of higher rates more recently. Recent research has suggested that the ice sheet could melt completely over the very long term (millennia) if global temperatures rise by somewhere between 1.9 and 4.6 degrees and they have already risen by an estimated 0.8 degrees. Complete melting would lead to a sea level rise of around 6-7m.

^^this was written the day this began happening. hm, where's follow-up, greenpeace, yo?

related coverage. On average in the summer, about half of the surface of Greenland's ice sheet naturally melts. At high elevations, most of that melt water quickly refreezes in place. Near the coast, some of the melt water is retained by the ice sheet and the rest is lost to the ocean. But this year the extent of ice melting at or near the surface jumped dramatically. According to satellite data, an estimated 97 percent of the ice sheet surface thawed at some point in mid-July.

Greenland glacier loses ice
Greenland glacier loses ice island twice the size of Manhattan
TEXT SIZE
E-mail

7:51 p.m., July 16, 2012--An ice island twice the size of Manhattan has broken off from Greenland’s Petermann Glacier, according to researchers at the University of Delaware and the Canadian Ice Service. The Petermann Glacier is one of the two largest glaciers left in Greenland connecting the great Greenland ice sheet with the ocean via a floating ice shelf.

Careful you're going to tick off the global warming skeptics on this site who will fling feces at you and similarly intelligent responses to evidence of global warming.

Heck everyone knows this melting ice is from government conspiracies (HAARP), strange wandering planets, and aliens, and not a well understood process predicted by scientists 15 years ago.

But look at the bright side: If you're currently a couple hundred feet above sea level, you'll have beach front property soon.

Get some perspective people - that ice still has not melted back to the ground levels of WWII.

This is just science cherry-picking data to reinforce their corrupt claims that CO2 causes global warming, so that they can introduce carbon taxes everywhere.

Planet X is affecting Global Warming by stirring up the Sun which is resulting in ever larger Corona Mass Ejections etc.

If this was just a cyclical thing, I find it hard to believe that the entire sheet would melt in four days which, then, indicates outside influence causing the Warming other then man made causes.

i'll pull a map on that in a second. read this whole article, it is....interesting.

Tropical cyclones

One of the more controversial topics in the science of climate change involves the impact of global warming on tropical cyclone activity. It appears likely that rising tropical ocean temperatures associated with global warming will lead to an increase in the intensity (and the associated destructive potential) of tropical cyclones. In the Atlantic a close relationship has been observed between rising ocean temperatures and a rise in the strength of hurricanes. Trends in the intensities of tropical cyclones in other regions, such as in the tropical Pacific and Indian oceans, are more uncertain due to a paucity of reliable long-term measurements.

While the warming of oceans favours increased tropical cyclone intensities, it is unclear to what extent rising temperatures affect the number of tropical cyclones that occur each year. Other factors, such as wind shear, could play a role. If climate change increases the amount of wind shear—a factor that discourages the formation of tropical cyclones—in regions where such storms tend to form, it might partially mitigate the impact of warmer temperatures. On the other hand, changes in atmospheric winds are themselves uncertain—because of, for example, uncertainties in how climate change will affect ENSO.

We've screwed up everything. The air we breathe, the land we live on and share with those we've allowed to survive, the water we drink and use to grow our crops, the waters that at one time were clean and healthy for many species of marine life. Oceans, ecosystems, plants, animals. Our children. We've screwed it all up.

Some will skim and either say or think, "it's just polar bears." Sadly, if it were baby seals that could be clubbed to death for money, there might be more reaction.

No single event of this type can be ascribed to changes in the climate.

But some experts say they are surprised by the extent of the changes to the Petermann Glacier in recent years.

"It is not a collapse but it is certainly a significant event," Eric Rignot from Nasa said in a statement.

Some other observers have gone further. "It's dramatic. It's disturbing," University of Delaware's Andreas Muenchow told the Associated Press.
