it seems like it.

this is something i wrote in maybe 2004 -

When I was little, about five or six years old I used to have a lot of nightmares. It seemed as if every time my mind drifted into that deep unconscious state of sleep it found a place amongst all my deepest fears. Hardly did I ever dream about prancing through fields of golden dew ridden flowers with the “My Little Pony” crew. In its sleeping state my mind wandered among the land of ferocious flesh feasting beasts and mind raping terrors.

Often awakening in a teeth-clenching and blankets pulled over my head state drowning in a heavy salty sweat I would start screaming in my most murderous scream for my mom.

“MMMMMMMMMMMMMMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!”

I would scream her name out as loud as I possibly could hoping that if all the gory blood soaked monsters heard me yelling her name they would back off knowing that someone was coming to my rescue. I would squeeze my eyes shut as tight as possible thinking that all thoughts would stop entering my mind if they were closed tight enough. I would do so until I heard my bedroom door make its familiar old creak. Then, ever so carefully I would slowly unclench my teeth and open my salty tear filled eyes as my mom flicked on the light switch. She would gently ask, “What’s wrong, H?”

I would never tell her what was wrong though. I would just look at her recognizable face, stare into her ocean blue eyes, release the gallons of air I had been holding up in my lungs, and just say, “I love you mom.”

And she would say, “Is that all you wanted?”

I always happily and enthusiastically nodded my head and went back to sleep just like that. Seeing her smiling face was all the reassurance I needed to banish the ferocious mind raping beasts back to the deep dark forbidden corners of my mind. And they wouldn’t return, for that night at least, because I would drift back to sleep with my mom’s fabulous smiling face on my mind.

the extremely gifted often have night terrors as it is a coping mechanism to help them understand things they as yet cannot comprehend! the skills to put the pieces of the puzzle into place are pieces that don't yet exist. and so the extent that the imagination takes hold is terrifying! lol
