Now 600 Million People In India Without Power From Second Grid COLLAPSE Today !!

NEW DELHI -On Monday, the Northern region of India plunged into darkness as the power supply in eight states was severely affected after failure of northern electricity transmission grid at about 2:30 am.The states that were paralyzed by darkness were Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan.

The eastern grid blacked out today just a day after India's northern power grid collapsed for several hours. Indian officials managed to restore power several hours later, but at 1:05 p.m. Tuesday the northern grid collapsed again, said Shailendre Dubey, an official at the Uttar Pradesh Power Corp. in India's largest state. About the same time, the eastern grid failed as well, said S.K. Mohanty, a power official in the eastern state of Orissa. The two grids serve about half India's population.Traffic lights went out across New Delhi. The city's Metro rail system, which serves about 1.8 million people a day, immediately shut down for the second day in a row leaving 600 million people without power now.According to officials, presently, electricity from Eastern and Western grids are being diverted to Northern grid. The Northern Grid, which is estimated to cater to around 28 percent of country's total population, had failed due to dense fog back in January, 2010.

The Northern Grid, one of the largest in the country, covers nine places -- Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, J&K and Chandigarh.India's demand for electricity has soared along with its economy in recent years, but utilities have been unable to meet the growing needs. India's Central Electricity Authority reported power deficits of more than 8 percent in recent months.At this time the cause of the grid outage is still unknown.

Back on March 9, 2012 India's Smart Grid came alive when Siemens picked up a $25 million contract for Mumbai region, while projects contend for $100 million in government smart grid grants.One by one, India’s state governments began to roll back the curtain on the country’s first big round of smart grid investments.Several Indian state governments reportedly laid plans for smart grid projects, ranging from smart meter rollouts in the Indian territories of Puducherry and Bangalore, to a nationwide deployment of phasor measurement devices across the nation’s five independent grid systems -- a first step in synchronizing them to share power -- at an estimated cost of 239 rupees crore ($48 million).India is the second most populous nation on earth, and about half of its people don’t have reliable access to the grid at all. (That makes the country an interesting target for distributed power and microgrid projects, by the way.) The grid India does have is run-down, and it’s also subject to a stress that North America and Europe lack: power theft, or “non-technical losses” in utility jargon.
ZPryme projects the Indian smart grid market could reach $1.9 billion by 2015, giving a sense of how far the country has to go to upgrade the grid it has before it takes the next steps into smart grid technology. But it also has plans to add 20 megawatts of solar power to its grid over the next 10 years, which could add stresses to the country’s grid infrastructure. Solving that problem is going to require a lot more smart grid features than anti-theft smart meters.

Are the power grids being affected as predicted by the Solar Maximum?A geomagnetic storm is a temporary disturbance of the Earth's magnetosphere caused by a disturbance in the interplanetary medium. A geomagnetic storm is a major component of space weather and provides the input for many other components of space weather. A geomagnetic storm is caused by a solar wind shock wave and/or cloud of magnetic field which interacts with the Earth's magnetic field. The increase in the solar wind pressure initially compresses the magnetosphere and the solar wind's magnetic field will interact with the Earth’s magnetic field and transfer an increased amount of energy into the magnetosphere. Both interactions cause an increase in movement of plasma through the magnetosphere (driven by increased electric fields inside the magnetosphere) and an increase in electric current in the magnetosphere and ionosphere. During the main phase of a geomagnetic storm, electric current in the magnetosphere create magnetic force which pushes out the boundary between the magnetosphere and the solar wind. The disturbance in the interplanetary medium which drives the geomagnetic storm may be due to a solar coronal mass ejection (CME) or a high speed stream (co-rotating interaction region or CIR) of the solar wind originating from a region of weak magnetic field on the Sun’s surface. The frequency of geomagnetic storms increases and decreases with the sunspot cycle. CME driven storms are more common during the maximum of the solar cycle and CIR driven storms are more common during the minimum of the solar cycle. Odenwald suggests that a geomagnetic storm on the scale of the solar storm of 1859 today would cause billions of dollars of damage to satellites, power grids and radio communications, and could cause electrical blackouts on a massive scale that might not be repaired for weeks.
