WTH...Pacific Ocean Off Oregon Coast Polluted with...COFFEE?
[link to www.stumbleupon.com]

The precise impacts that exposure to caffeinated seas may have on humans are not well known. However, related research indicates that evidence of caffeine contamination serves as a good indicator for the presence of other potentially harmful pollutants that have found their way into our waterways, such as prescription medication and hormones. The effects on aquatic life are also not well understood, but lab studies have already demonstrated that higher levels of caffeine in the water have been shown to produce cellular stress in intertidal mussels.

a little bit more about wastewater recycling and what exactly they are talking about when they say medications and other pollutants (this is coming out of your sink, people! drink it and weep!):

[link to www.usatoday.com]

"Water is going to be the oil of the 21st century," predicts Bill Cooper, director of the Urban Water Research Center at the University of California-Irvine.

"I don't really feel that I want to be the champion of drinking sewage water," says Takashi Asano, who won the Stockholm Water Prize — one of the industry's highest awards — for his research on wastewater reclamation and reuse. "But something needs to be done, and this is one option."

Orange County hopes to eventually pump purified wastewater straight into the tap, without mixing it with other water. But that may be another 10 years down the road because of public wariness, he says.

Orange County resident Manuel Sandoval would prefer that seawater be purified instead, because "it wouldn't gross people out as much."

Yet Sandoval, 24, a psychology and music student at California State University-Fullerton, suspects most people don't even know recycled wastewater is added to the drinking supply.

"You always have something to do," he says. "The last thing on your mind is what's in the water."

Prozac in our water linked to autism

A new study has found the same genes that are activated in people with autism were triggered in fish swimming in water spiked with antidepressants Prozac and Effexor.

Drugs on Tap: What's In Our Tap Water?

Here’s a question to ponder. What happens to the hundreds of millions of prescription drugs and the over-the-counter medications that are swallowed daily?

The answer: they go out through the plumbing. Being flushed down the toilet and into the sewage system, 90 per cent of every drug swallowed is either excreted, totally unchanged, or is broken down into active metabolites. They then continue on their way into your water supply to eventually return as a chemical cocktail flowing out of your kitchen tap!

In addition to pharmaceutical drugs, there’s another group of chemicals sneaking down the drain. More than 10,500 chemical ingredients are used to manufacture what is collectively known as personal care products. These products include moisturisers, cleaners, bubble baths, shampoos, fragrances, deodorants, mouthwashes and sunscreens etc. Research has shown that vast numbers of these chemicals can alter our endocrine, neurological, respiratory and immune systems.

^^^WELL DONE ARTICLE...fairly long, highly inclusive.

Would you like birth control pills with your coffee?

Synthetic steroid hormones are taken by one hundred million women wordwide as oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy. Both natural and synthetic oestrogen as well as oestrogen-mimicking chemicals from degradation of plasticizers enter sewage treatment plants.

A Canadian study provided concrete evidence of just what exposure to these chemicals portends. For three years, Canadian scientists added birth-control pills into a pristine Ontario Lake set aside for research to measure this impact. The results: all male fish in the lake – from tiny tadpoles to large trout – were feminized egg proteins were growing abnormally in their bodies) This was an unmistakable sign of hormone disruption. Feminized male fish have now been found in rivers and streams worldwide.

Wasn't me, I drink mine right down to the very last drop and throw the grounds into my garden.

chuckle

Seriously, though, I did read similar articles in the past about prescription drugs and polluted waters.

I can't see this getting any better.

wtf? or what about, coffee being dumped down the drain and then that goes into the sea.

damn. you know, caffeine is a pesticide. Imagine if that goes and starts killing off life in the sea.

why isn't the caffeine degraded/metabolized first before going into the water?

Further positive findings were revealed in 2009, when a study found that the water quality difference between recycled water, surface water, and groundwater showed an almost identical set of constituents of the 244 varieties they were tested for. When detected, most constituents merely appeared in parts per billion quantities, or even parts per trillion ranges. Commonly occurring ingredients included traces of the insect repellent DEET and caffeine. Significantly, these remnants were found in all water types. Meanwhile, Triclosan – an agent found in anti-bacterial soap and toothpaste – did occur in every sample, with slightly higher levels in recycled water than in surface and ground water. The most significant finding, however, was that reclaimed water contained disinfection by-products since it had been treated.

Guess I'm guilty, just like all my other fellow coffee drinkers.

At least I don't take pharmaceutical drugs, just an occasional tylenol or two for my headaches.

now i get to think about how it continues on beyond the bladder and into the waters. *having a macrocosm moment here, bear with me.*

So, now that they discovered caffeine in the ocean, do they know if it naturally dissipates?
And if so, how long does it take?

The precise impacts that exposure to caffeinated seas may have on humans are not well known. However, related research indicates that evidence of caffeine contamination serves as a good indicator for the presence of other potentially harmful pollutants that have found their way into our waterways, such as prescription medication and hormones. The effects on aquatic life are also not well understood, but lab studies have already demonstrated that higher levels of caffeine in the water have been shown to produce cellular stress in intertidal mussels.
