And as someone mentioned, all the variety shows.

We were awash in real talent and it was presented nightly.

And today we have..... well, we have what we have.

I am glad, and do consider myself fortunate, to know better for having lived it.

Yea ..as i see it all the talent we see and hear today were bred talent not born talented . They are pushed by advertising and marketing schemes to become popular . Every once in a while a someone born talented comes along .. but its very few nowadays

Good thread. I am a true Lawrence Welk fan; he provided wholesome entertainment that gave many a chance at careers they might not otherwise have had.

I'm going to age myself a bit here but those variety shows like Lawrence Welk, Hee Haw, Laugh In, Carol Burnett show, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis were the best. The humor is unmatched and the stars were genuine and real(smokers and drinkers) lol. Maybe that is why they were funny. They didn't need heavy sexual connotations or swearing to be funny either. They used wit and intellect to get people to laugh....and laugh many did! Today's comic don't have a pimples worth of talent. Those comedians back then could sing and dance like no other. It saddens me where we have gone in the past few years. Sites like this wouldn't have stood a chance in those days. It seemed everyone was fairly happy and enjoying life!

humor also seemed more self deprecating then, now it about bashing others. My favorite was Red Skelton. Carol Burnett when they'd get laughing so hard they couldn't say their lines. That was funny!

Youtube has been a tremendous boon, a window in time(s) for younger people to discover what they are missing today and oldies to recapture memories, relive if even a little bit, that feeling and experience of a better time.

Time and time again I'll read comments on yt vids of the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, from young people who are appreciative and enthusiastic for being exposed to some of what went on before.

I really do miss the civility, the heart, the high caliber talent. Big time. At least it can be viewed through the time tunnel that yt provides.

Do you all remember the Electric Company? I thought you might appreciate this clip. Look how very far he has come, and this was his very first "gig". I remember when I saw him on a big screen movie for the first time, and yelling, "Hey ! that is the fellow from Electric Company" LOL
He really can sing too. What a talent!

[youtube] [link to www.youtube.com]

Ohhhhhh, and to the person that said the "clunk, clunk of the television channels turning" <<<grin>>> We had nthe total sum of 3 nmajor channels back then, and one PBS. LOL My gret aunt would always tell us we had to change the channels slowly or we would "break" the television set. hahhaaaa... ohhhh the days. "Having the big one 'Lizabeth, and I am coming to join ya hunny" beared

I miss those days, and I do not watch television anymore unless it is football season. I do not think I am missing anything at all: uneducated, exlicative based drivvel.

Re: Saw an episode of the Lawrence Welk show lat night and ......
Kinda hard to take Welk or HeeHaw. Both shows were very hick, panderingly so. Welk's fashion sense for color and style was capital T Terrible. Had some pretty decent talent, but they were all dressed like a nightmare. HeeHaw was a white trash festival despite the music which often was excellent.

Never saw Milton Berle, or Sid Caesar, few Kovacs, but Jackie Gleason was an extreme talent. Lots of youtubes out there from The Andy Williams Show. Glen Campbell had a show. Smothers Brothers were kinda radical & anti-war with their standup and Pat Paulsen. Dinah Shore was a big deal until The Beatles. Dean Martin had Jonathan Winters as a regular. Carol Burnet got her start on The Gary Moore show. Ed Sullivan was The Big Time.

Quit watching SNL about 10yrs ago; the jokes were too dull and the actors just too stupid and smarmy.

About the only talent in singing these days is in the jazz genre. All the girl rock singers sound alike and wimpy, same as the men.

The Greats hold up and still thrill & excite everytime you listen. Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Gordon Lightfoot, Beach Boys, America, Joe Strummer/Clash, Four Freshmen... Big Band, large ensemble jazz from 50s and early 60s. Amazing harmonies and vocal phrasing/range.

Every Saturday night our family gathered around the tv to see how long it would take for Tim to make Harvey lose control.

Tim could get the other cast members to laugh sometimes, but he could never get Vicky Lawrence except for this one episode.

Re: Saw an episode of the Lawrence Welk show lat night and ......
Just the other day I was wondering if anyone remembers Lawrence Welk.

My grandmother used to like that show, she watched it every week and there were a couple of dancers she really liked. If that couple didn't do enough dances she'd get angry (she was around 80) and start yelling at the tv.

I saw it on PBS not too long ago after not seeing it for years, it struck me just as corny as it did back then but it was fun to watch because it's so dated which makes it interesting now.

My grandparents used to have one of the first remote controlled tv's. You pushed the remote and the knob would turn as the channels changed. It was loud too. It really made the clunk clunk sound that the poster on the first quote described.

My mom was just talking about that show today. I've never seen the entire show, just a few clips here and there.

I grew up watching I Love Lucy in reruns. It's still one of my favorite tv shows. This one is a classic.

And Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's Johnny! They don't make talkshow hosts like him anymore.

We had Hopi neighbors 3 houses down.

My dad's best friend was Navaho.

It's a fact that the American Way was B.S. from the beginning.

Genocide.

BUT....

There was a spate of years there.... for a coupla' decades, when it was vibrating, making moves to fulfill some of the higher ideals....

Vietnam killed that.

The late 50s to the 70s seemed like a simpler relaxed time, maybe cause we were young. I miss it. The predictions of the future were wonderous things, look at us now....not even a flying car yet. Jackie Gleason,Red Skelton and Dino ruled and the government seemed more civic minded, now they won't even patch potholes. I'm almost sorry I lived long enough to see our future....far from wonderous.
