Those countries are more than 90% islamic! It all boils down to governments I think. Iran had a different sort of gov at one time and women were not forced to cover their hair there. Now look at them. Same with Libya. So I think this whole covering issue is primarily an off-shoot of government policy. No idea bout Indonesia. But Bangladesh does seem to have a sane government. I guess having a woman as president helps. Let's see how Turkey progresses under Erdogen. He does seem a lot more conservative than the Turks are used too. |

Perhaps we should ask one of the Western practitioners and followers of Christian religious groups that requires women or men to keep their heads covered in public, like the Amish or the LDS? They should know... ... what does christian scripture say about it? [link to www.evangelicaloutreach.org] |

Erdogen is the Prime Minister of Turkey since 2003! His "Islamic" party is in power for NINE years now! NINE YEARS! After nine years, women keep walking in the streets of Istambul without being forced to cover their heads! |

Those countries are more than 90% islamic! Its because Islam is not what has been portrayed in the western media. 9 islamic countries have had female presidents. Look at Pakistan. 40% women in the military and female president twice. The reason is because Islam can be interpreted however you want it. God in the quran puts more emphasis on your heart and intentions than your actions. Covering your head is not a big deal and will not get you into heaven. I got muslim girls in univeristy who wear a bikini and go to the beach with us. Then on the other hand I got hindu girls who would never wear a bikini. Basically its all about the culture and the country. If a fight ever broke out between pakistan, india, saudia or iran, all muslims would fight for their country not their religion. But in the western media they portray them all as having just one goal or purpose which is islam. Just like christains muslim god gives them free will to do whatever the hell they want and at the end they will be judged. I have a few muslim buddies. One of them has no qualms about me having a bacon turkey sandwich and he has eaten with me several time but the other one wont even enter my kitchen or touch my utensils. So from what I've seen first hand they are a very diverse group of people. Some are strict while others are very moderate and some are so liberal they dont give a fuck about religion at all. Islam is basically where the western world was 200 years ago. Its trying to catch up and of course there are going to be bumps in the road. |

According to statistics only around 20% women all overthe Islamic world cover their heads. Less than 10% wear the burka you see on tv. And those are the ones western media keep showing on tv. |

MILLIONS of women in Turkey, Indonesia and Bangladesh DON'T wear headscarves. MILLIONS! It doesn't matter if they are a "minority" or not, because they are MILLIONS! And there are NO LAWS forcing them to wear headscarves! The women who DO wear headscarves do it because THEY WANT, not because they are forced! Now, look at this: DEMOCRATIC countries with HUGE Muslim majority, and NO LAWS forcing women to wear headscarves against their will! NO LAWS! How do you explain that? |

Also, there are discussions about the necessity of the head scarf in regards to ISlam. On some interpretations it is claimed that it's not the head that should be covered but the "jewels" of the body. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21566450 I hope the Muslim Brotherhood follow the example of the "Justice and Development Party" of Turkey, and don't use its majority in the Parliament to force the hijab on women... If it is a virtue for a woman to use the hijab, that virtue should be a personal choice. What is the point in using it only because you are forced? How is that a virtue? |

Muslim Brotherhood is not a ruling party, our Parliament was dissolved. People still have this misconseption, in charge now are our SCAF and a President who immediately resigned from both MB and their political party after elections and made an oath in Tahrir to be a President to all Egyptians. Some veiled women took off their hijab in protest after his election and said they won't be forced to wear it, because it's a personal choice. If anyone in the future would try this, it would not work, women would rise up like you've never seen before :). They are a good 50% of the population here :D. |
