I remember certain engineers positing that even if they are able to cap the well, the pressure has been released and will find its way to the surface by the path of least resistance. To me, that would be the fragile salt domes that dissolve when exposed to water. The guy who wrote that story for the Examiner quoted Wikipedia- which is not a reliable source. So, I know this is a dangerous situation, but probably not to the extent that wiki describes.

Big hole..Full of natural methane gas. NOT Stable at present..Growing. Intersecting a Sink hole near it has been a low level radioactive dump for years. Glowing... BOOM.
