Fraud
today i went to get ice cream from dairy queen and my debit card was declined. i know there is plenty of money in there, and my bank was closed so i couldn't ask anybody about this so I checked the online bank management tool. there is a deduction in amount of 71.59 at a winn-dixie in trussville, alabama.

now, I live in West Virginia and have not even left the state in years so I called the store in question and spoke to a manager who identified himself as "Danny". explained that i am in possession of my debit card, and to even take card numbers without identification is an illegal practice. I even told him I was in contact with local law enforcement concerning the matter.

long short of it, he said in more or less words there is nothing they could do about it.

I am more than steamed at the moment about this, but what can I do?

Has this happened to any ppl on here? and if so, how was the issue resolved?

Any advice/comments would be extremely helpful.

Peace and Love

call your bank and place a charge dispute on it...also if needed call the credit card company ( if it 's a C/C ) ; i caught my unauthorized charge ( theft ) yesterday just a few days after it was charged to my C/C account... i called barnes and nobles ( where theft occured ) and told them that it wasn't me who did the purchase so they cancelled and placed a block on further purchase with that card ( hopefully they did this as stated anyway ) and also called the bank to place a dispute and cancelled the account so the thief can use it again....

Google debit card skimming. That's what happened to you, and its not the winn dixie's fault.

This happened to me also. My card was used in California ( I am in the midwest) at a Carl's Jr for around 50.00. The bank will get your money back it took a week to get mine put back in the account and they will cancel your card and send you a new one. They steal your numbers and clone them on any card even a hotel key card then swipe it thru as credit. Mine got stolen when the first time ever I had used it at Wal-Mart ( I despise walmart) and got caught up in a theft ring. There is nothing the store can do only your bank...good luck!

I had someone use both my citibank cc in Louisiana ...I'm in CA. And actually, Citibank called ME to let me know of suspicious activity on my account. THey took care of it and gave me new account numbers.

Why don't you just CALL your bank...remember than thingie people used to use BEFORE the online banking...it's called a phone. Just call them ASAP or you'll end up being responsible for it since you knew about it and did nothing (especially since it's a debit card and not cc).

your bank should have contacted you that there was a purchase in another state

see banks have a program and see how you use your debit card.... if your habits change they should contact you ask you if this is you using the debit

your bank should have you covered too...

if not

when the bank openes take your money out find a bank that cares OR

fuck the banks all together use it only to cash a check and take cash out...

most all banks require you to keep at least 100.00 bucks in the account or more you go below that they charge you!

that i could never figure out

charge you for going below an amount

your own money!

this happened to me - someone in brazil somehow was using my check card info for several transactions.

turns out, you can't dispute it if it is still just an "authorization" - it has to actually post as a completed transaction before they will do anything. your money is tied up that whole time, sucks.

also, some banks charge YOU a fee to issue a new card despite it not being your fault.

Thanks for the advice hf

my bank is usually good about this stuff. stopped a $200 transaction to france a few months ago and called me at 9:00AM to inform me they stopped it, and are issuing me a new card.

I am certain they will call at 9 tomorrow, and they definitely shut down the card already since I got embarrassed at the ice cream shoppe, luckily I had some credit cards with me.

Was mostly confused on how it happened inside a store in another state, but a previous poster helped to answer this when explaining how the info can be transferred to another type of card; ie-hotel keycards.

Surely the bank can tell me exactly what time it was swiped, and hopefully the store has surveillance and these criminals can be brought to justice.

Thanks you all for the great responses, it has truly helped. GLP-power!

some places do not accept $100 bills anymore
or even $50 bills.

Nationwide Insurance does not take $100
bills at their pay counters anymore.

I saw a Mexican in line to pay his
auto insurance, over $700 was his bill.
He laid out 7 stacks of $20 bills to
wit the clerk had to use her forgery marking
pen on every single bill to see if it
was counterfeit. It took over 10 mins
for her to do that transaction when
7 $100 bills could have done the job.

for sure, bru. no way that charge is gonna fly, they probably saw that I bought beers and smokes here in WEst by God in the morning and somehow made it to AL (which i have never been to) later in the day.

They always do a replacement card with new numbers, but do you think I should change actual bank account number?

It's me from earlier in the thread - I had this happen to me too. It has been probably over a year ago and I got a new card but still have my same bank account. Haven't had any other problems since (knock on wood). I wouldn't think you need to get a new account.

We need to get those little card holder things that block people from reading the cards I guess.

usually the acct # on the card is different from the actual bank acct but link to each other for business transaction... so a new card # can be linked to your old checking or saving acct and the bank just blocks the old card from having access to any of it.
