Anonymous Coward User ID: 22479380 Russia 08/24/2012 09:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Not that surprising. Quoting: Halcyon Dayz, FCD Electrification was already in full swing, the telephone had been invented, there was a transatlantic telegraph cable, the first football stadium got electric floodlights (arc lights, not bulbs), etc. The era is called the Second Industrial Revolution by economical historians. This, I can't see what's so crazy about it, back then electricity was not only widespread but there was a somehow bizarre cult of electricity: scientists electrified soil to make plants grow faster, electrified plants and trees, in medicine they were using electricity to cure rheumatism and arthritis and whatnot and started to use electroshock to cure mental illnesses. They even tried to animate dead bodies with electricity, "Frankenstein" was written in 1840s. Belief that electricity can be a gate to the spirit-world was popular among occultists, they were trying to build electrical machines to communicate with ghosts. Different people including freemasons were building theories of political dystopias based on laws of magnetism and electricity. I mean, I can understand you being charmed with electricity but, this is just a rather banal and by that time already old-fashioned motto written on a piece of paper in 19th century, what are you guys really, some sect of elecrical engineers worshiping Tesla as Messiah? |

Yep. But, it was not necessarily in 'full swing' as it was still competing with other energy forms. In the early 19th century, electricity was a novel invention that competed with steam, hydraulics, direct heating and cooling, light, and most notably gas. During this period, gas production and delivery had become the first centralized element in the modern energy industry. It was first produced on customer’s premises but later evolved into large gasifiers that enjoyed economies of scale. Anonymous Coward User ID: 14415865 United States 08/24/2012 10:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Why do Americans always use the word "Dominate" when it should be "Dominant"? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22484456 Is this some kinda Freudian slip? Because we're a pain in the world's ass. Arrogant, stubborn and petulant for no reason. Try living here. It gets old. Go flog yourself... With all the problems we have... still the best thing going. The situations we needlessly get into as a country get frustrating... but life here never gets old. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22484456 Is this some kinda Freudian slip? Yes it is. We eat a lot. And you brits are a bunch of ants bowing down to your queen. The engravings translate to "This space intentionally left blank." The prayer is inscribed in an ancient script, rarely used today. It seems to be a philippic against small insects, absent-mindedness, and the picking up and dropping of small objects. The gate is open; through it you can see a desolation, with a pile of mangled bodies in one corner. Thousands of voices, lamenting some hideous fate, can be heard. The way through the gate is barred by evil spirits, who jeer at your attempts to pass. |

Its like so mnay people here view people in power as gods. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22530632 No they didn't. At the time they were trying to figure out which energy was going to be most transferable, and most efficient. At the time, gas was the go to energy source. It does tend to remind us that at one time in America we did strive for exceptionalism, unlike the kindergarten image looking notes used today. Oh America, where forth have thou gone? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22484456 Is this some kinda Freudian slip? Most Americans are stupid. I was originally going to reply to you with an explanation about ios autocorrect changing the word but after thinking about it I'm just going to admit that they are stupid. You aren't exactly talking to the best and the brightest here on GLP either so I'm going to assume that this isn't the last time you will see it. I actually got into an argument with my boss last week over his use of the word then where he should have used than. I would normally overlook this very common grammatical error but in this case it changed the entire meaning of the sentence and actually cost the company a 4 digit sum of money. |
