Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22133485 No problem...The drive from Dallas to Joplin is pretty easy. I dont know how many miles you plan to drive each day but you might want to stay in Joplin on your first night. There are plenty of hotels and its a nice city. Try to time your trip so you do not hit St. Louis in rush hour (anytime after about 3 pm- 7pm) Make sure you take 270 around the outside of the city. Then you pick up 55. I can't help you much past that point. Thank you so much! I was not sure if Joplin would be about right, but you have helped me confirm this. I'm planning on driving about 7 hours each day (taking an hour off in the middle). I wonder if I should aim for Chicago on day 2? Or possibly not quite that far. Maybe Bloomington, IL. You could make it to Chicago but I would not push it that hard. Chicago is a big city and a big mess...I would stay south of it and tackle the Chicago area in the morning. I drove from Springfield Missouri to Chicago once and was pretty tired when I got there. (I was much younger then too) But...the farm country between St. Louis and Chicago sure was pretty. OK so I will not try to make it to Chicago from Joplin, MO where I will stay the first night. Any suggestions for a place to stop between Joplin and Chicago? I wish I could help you out but I just dont know that much about that area. What I usually do is about 6 hours into a days drive I stop and look at my atlas to see what town is 100 or so miles miles ahead of me. Then I put the name of the town into my Garmin and have it search for hotels in that town. The Garmin will give you a list of hotels, addresses, and phone numbers. I pick out a couple of hotels, call them to see what the rates are and if they have rooms. If they do...I make a reservation and tell the Garmin to take me there. Maybe someone on this thread knows Illinois and can help you out with the towns between St. Louis and Chicago. I tend to try and stay in hotels outside of cities and ones that are right off the highway. I don't like to drive around cities I am not familiar with looking for a hotel after dark. |

There is a good side of town and a real bad side of town. Peoria might be a better bet in that vicinity. Or if you continue on about 100 more miles the western and southwestern suburbs of Chicago are generally a safer option.
