We still have that system today. It is run by the treasury. Coin is created without interest and given status as legal tender. People felt this wasn't sufficient to supply them with enough money to buy useless crap with, so they went to banks and asked them to make more than the treasury.

The only legal tender, not counting coin, is bank loans (Federal Reserve Notes). The system has to be reformed to allow the Treasury to create real money again, without debt or obligation. They gave up that power with the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. The FRS creates all of their money out of nothing, and charges the Government interest and principle on it. The Treasury could just as easily create that money themselves without borrowing it from a bank. It would stay in circulation indefinitely because it is not a debt or obligation.

Hey banking shill, you are either ignorant or a liar, probably both. Commercial banks create 97% of the money in circulation by loaning it into existence. People don't choose to use FR notes, they were imposed by the FRA in 1913 as the only legal tender, other than coins. Coins are a trivial fraction of a % of the money supply. The rest is loaned into existence by banks at interest.

There are no precious metals backing the FR notes BTW. We have been off the gold standard since 1972. There are no more silver certificates either.

The FR buys Treasury bonds with money they create out of nothing. That's how they monetize the debt. The government has to pay it back with interest, even though they could have created the same money free of charge. That's a nice scam if you can legalize it, which they did in 1913.

I don't know where you get the idea that people demand the current system. Most people aren't even aware that banks create money when they make loans. They don't loan the depositor's money at all. It is ignorance and law, not demand, that allows the current system to flourish.
