World War I was fought in trenches because of advances to defensive warfare outpaced offensive, which made advancing very hard. Machine guns could mow down huge numbers of men, but the Tanks and Air support that WW II would bring that allowed infantry to break through fortified sections were only just being invented.

trenches saved lives. Fighting in the open got u killed much quicker.

Heck, while at it why didn't the Allies get off just a mile down the Beaches of Normandy and avoid the heavily bunker-down Germans and their assault machine guns? Because orders are orders, that's why. That's the military.

To say that America,UK,Russian,France,Canada, had no weapons and went to off to Battle regardless is non-sense. Laughable if it weren't sad. The Trenches represented the Graves of the Ancients that were missing and are still missing. They asked and when answers weren't forth coming word gave rise that people were in fact biblical reincarnations and TPTB wanted it stopped. Who said they had no weapons? They had plenty. Guns, artillery, ext. But they were mostly DEFENSIVE weapons, which is why trench warfare was such a large part.

As for your comments about D-day, the Germans had troops on ALL the landing zones, of course. In fact the allies sent false reports trying to get them to fortify locations other then Normandy.

As for why they didn't use Trenches, they had bunkers and other even sturdier fortifications.

Trenches and fortifications were dug so they wouldn't get very dead from artillery shells and machine gun fire.
