Self-Driving Cars Approved by California Legislature
Self-Driving Cars Approved by California Legislature

Published: Friday, 31 Aug 2012

The California state legislature just moved that dream a little closer to reality by approving a bill paving the way for driverless cars to be allowed on Golden State freeways.

The bill, authored by State Senator Alex Padilla (D-Van Nuys), was passed by the state Assembly on Wednesday and then given the overwhelming thumbs up by the state Senate the following day.

If signed by Governor Jerry Brown, Padilla's bill would legally allow autonomous vehicles on the road and charge the state's Department of Motor Vehicles with determining the standards for self-driving cars, rules which current do not exist under the present vehicle code.

The Economist notes that about 90 percent of traffic accidents are caused by human error,

Even so, the bill requires the cars to have a flesh-and-blood human being behind the wheel if something goes wrong.

Bay Area tech giant Google has been leading the way in self-driving cars. The team behind the project asserts that the technology is largely already there and their self-driving cars are ready to hit the road right now.

nothing any worse than when some clown gets behind the wheel after having a few beers, a woman putting on her make up while driving, a teenager texting while driving, a 90 year old who mistakes the brake for a gas pedal, etc...

I like how the exact same argument people are now trying to use to justify keeping current human driven cars,

is the exact same argument people used against cars when they were first being introduced in the early 1900s,

dont put faith in technology, keep riding a horse, yada yada.

Self driving cars are wonderful, and they cant get here soon enough.

On top of the fact they will allow us to finally eliminate the DUI problem,

they will also give the elderly and handicapped the ability to drive again.

i wouldnt doubt it, these are the chief enemies i see of this technology:

1. insurance companies; who will be put under the screws when people start saying "Uhhhm I have a self driving car now, my policy should be very low if the robot drives"

2. police unions, who will panic about how to ticket a self driving car.

3. The ambulance chasing lawyers. I can imagine the usual suspects jumping in front of self driving cars for some insurance law suit; although it should be a very simple matter to have these cars covered with wall to wall cameras, so if someone did try and jump in front of a self driving car on purpose for some kind of fraud thing, the car camera records could be accessed to show the person jumping in front of the car on purpose.

are you one of these crazy people who assumes everything in a history book is an evil illusion?

Why am I so eager to make the world a better place,

I dont know, that's just my nature.

DUI's are a problem, and the self driving cars are the solution.

These cars will also allow the elderly and disabled to have worry free driving and mobility.

What history book? I never read that. I've heard just the opposite, that people were eager to have cars. Check out the video of 1906 San Francisco. Tons of cars, and no one freaking out.
And why do you resort to insults? Are you threatened by people who don't share your rosie view of the future?

As far as DUIs and old people, how about more mass transit?
Oh that's right, there's no money in that for Google.

I think they mean driving assisted cars as in collision control and traction control etc.
No way a car without a driver will be allowed on a public road.

Nah man you're reading it wrong it doesn't say "driver less" car.
It says self driving which means systems to assist the driver.
No matter what laws the government makes, if the cops saw a car with no driver on the road they would smash it off the road.

Steering correct assist collision assist there is many automated features in cars these days which make them safer.
This goes back to ABS and when they started that they had to make new vehicle design laws due to it being "self braking".

If smart (and they are) Google will partner with two or three car companies and lobby CA and NY for tax credits to encourage the buyers of cars to opt for the auto-drive units to be installed at the point of manufacture. Because these cars will be safer by a factor of 90%, insurance on them should cost 1/10th of what it will cost on cars with drivers full time. The more you use the "auto-drive" unit, the lower your insurance bills will go!

This is a whole new era opening up and I can hardly wait to own one!
