Salton Sea poses big earthquake threat to Southern California
Some info after last EQ's in south CA at Salton Sea area ..

Also think stronger EQ will come from last EQ's of M 5.4, when I don't know for now but probably soon ..

Very dangerous area also months-years to California and West Coast for strong and catastrophic EQ ..

Thread: Three Earthquake in South California Around M 5.4 ..

Flooding of Ancient Salton Sea Linked to San Andreas Earthquakes

When its natural dimensions were in place, Lake Cahuilla and its surrounding region experienced in a 1,000-year period five earthquakes on the Southern San Andreas that are believed to have been larger than magnitude 7. The temblors occurred about 180 years apart. It's been more than 300 years since the last one.

"We've been baffled as to why the Southern San Andreas hasn't gone. It's been compared to a woman who is 15 months pregnant," said Scripps seismologist Debi Kilb, a report co-author. "Now this paper offers one explanation why."

The researchers cautioned that failure of the stepover faults is ultimately driven by tectonic forces and could still set off a major rupture of the San Andreas Fault independently of any lake level fluctuations. Other research teams have estimated that stress buildup in the area is still great enough to produce a quake between magnitude 7 and 8. The idea that the San Andreas is triggered by stress loading in the Salton Sea supports the assumption by many scientists that a future quake sequence could propagate northward and potentially cause significant damage in the Los Angeles area.

"Earthquake simulations reveal that shaking of large metropolitan areas such as Riverside and Los Angeles will be larger if the earthquake propagates from south to north -- our research suggests that the Salton Sea stepover zone may provide a trigger for such a propagation direction," said Scripps geologist Neal Driscoll, a report co-author.

Here is full paper ..

Loading of the San Andreas fault by flood-induced
rupture of faults beneath the Salton Sea

Daniel Brothers1*, Debi Kilb2, Karen Luttrell2, Neal Driscoll2 and Graham Kent3

The southern San Andreas fault has not experienced a large earthquake for approximately 300 years, yet the previous five earthquakes occurred at180-year intervals.

Large strike-slip faults are often segmented by lateral step over zones.Movement on smaller faults within a stepover zone could perturb the main fault segments and potentially trigger a large earthquake. The southern San Andreas fault terminates in an extensional stepover zone beneath the Salton Sea—a lake that has experienced periodic flooding and desiccation since the late Holocene. Here we reconstruct the magnitude and timing of fault activity beneath the Salton Sea over several earthquake cycles. We observe coincident timing between flooding events, stepover fault
displacement and ruptures on the San Andreas fault. Using Coulomb stress models, we show that the combined effect of lake loading, stepover fault movement and increased pore pressure could increase stress on the southern San Andreas fault to levels sufficient to induce failure. We conclude that rupture of the stepover faults, caused by periodic flooding of the palaeo-Salton Sea and by tectonic forcing, had the potential to trigger earthquake rupture on the southern San Andreas fault. Extensional stepover
zones are highly susceptible to rapid stress loading and thus the Salton Sea may be a nucleation point for large ruptures on the southern San Andreas fault.

Potential for volcanic activity in Salton Sea

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- As if the Big One -- an overdue major earthquake on the southern San Andreas fault -- isn't enough of a concern, the Salton Sea area has another potential force of nature that could someday put on a show: volcanoes.

The Salton Buttes are a line of four small volcanoes on the southeastern shore of the Salton Sea near Calipatria, about 100 miles east of San Diego. Scientists estimate they last erupted between 6,500 and 10,000 years ago -- which at least technically classifies them as active.

Brothers Jimmy and Lonnie Mason of Bakersfield recently fished for tilapia in the Salton Sea, yards from Obsidian Butte, one of the Salton Buttes.

"As long as it stays underground, I'm not afraid," Jimmy Mason said. "But if anything starts bubbling or popping, I'll be out of here quick."

Beverly Hills earthquakes hit at intersection of 2 major faults ..

Two earthquakes that hit Beverly Hills this week struck at the intersection of two potentially dangerous faults that run through the heart of urban Los Angeles County ..

Technically, the first is a foreshock I think last one also ..

Both faults could trigger a powerful magnitude 7.0 quake because faults are quite long so meaning they are capable of producing a destructive quake ..

So people in California can party without worry?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4130082

No my friend pressure and tenseness from tectonic plates friction was not released at Ca from long time ago, any time can crack somewhere at San Andreas fault or Juan de Fuca ..

From 1999 only one M 6.5+ but that one was in Mex, EQ will come also think somewhere north of last one ..

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

California waiting for big one and I positive EQ will come, when is very hard to say for now think in next 12 months but all sings are already there maybe except one ..

Christchurch have M 4.3, dangerous time for that area coming ..

Soon as either Vesuvius or Pelee Volcano's act out then you can count on Southern California going down. The Louisianna Sinkhole issue is really bad and its going to cause problems really soon. Count on The New Madrid to bring a great flood from Salt Lake into Nevada. The whole West Coast of the United States and portions of the Central regions are going down big time. If either one of those Volcano's start to act up grab your bug out bags if you live in those areas. Edgar Casey has been right about all of this all the way along and alot of what he said is coming true right now.
