MISSISSIPPI RIVER flows BACKWARDS for 24 HOURS!!

I wonder if this has anything to do with these sinkholes, as well as other claims of salt water moving up the Mississippi.

Im just hearing many stories of salt water where it isn't supposed to be.

IIRC it's not the first time this has happened recently because of storm surge.

Meh, its just from the storm surge.

The last time the mississippi flowed backwards is when the New Madrid went off a long time ago. Another river did the same thing. The same thing is happening phillipines. The land mass there has SUNK 45 FEET. Before the Earthquake happened. Same thing in India. Sea is coming inland. Millions of acres are now flooded. China too. Look around.

Backflow from the Gulf... or does the salt come from the numerous salt domes?

it does it every time there is a decent hurricane. it did it during Katrina too.

it flowed backwards here in missouri during the great new madrid earthquake.

there was talk about the GOM flowing up river from the drought long before Isaac had even entered the GOM.

That is pretty wild man.

Some are saying this is "normal" with a decent hurricane. Others say it hasn't flowed backwards since the last big New Madrid quake. So which is it? If it really hasn't done so since New Madrid, I'd say this isn't very normal.....

Wasn't there some complaints about the drought causing the river to slow down a whole lot?

The river flow has been down significantly with the drought in the upper Midwest. This decreased river flow, combined with a large storm surge, resulted in the reverse flow of the Mississippi River. The inflow continues only to the point where it is overcome by the natural river flow. I think that it was the Baton Rouge area where the inflow ended.

Although rare, it does happen - the largest contributing factor being the lowered natural river flow.

What might be wrong that is short term?

What might go wrong that is long term?

Or did it just flow backwards and it's not a big deal?

What if it took a wrong turn when it was flowing backwards and went over to the Grand Canyon instead of St. Louis?

DISASTER ... !!

The Grand Canyon would be flooded and raft trips downriver would instead be raft trips UPRIVER!!

Let's just hope that the river's navigator when it decided to go backwards was NOT as directionally challenged as Wrong Way Corrigan!!

in a normal year salt flows into the mississippi about 12 miles

this year, before the hurricane, it was inland 90 miles

so it wasn't normal to begin with
before flowing backwards there was already 90 miles of salty river

and is anyone asking/studying what effect this could have on the new madrid?

Not the first time a collapsed salt dome has reversed the flow of a river.

I think the scale of what is occuring in Assumption Parish is a bit larger however.

If you believe these hurricanes can be 'driven' to a particular area, then hey presto, instant cover up.

If you dont, then bad luch she hit in the area and caused a reverse storm surge back up the river.

.... so much for those berms they created at the mouth at a cost of some US$20million to stop salt intrusion..
