"If we continue to neglect the issue, the Yangtze, China's largest water source, may become China's largest sewage drain one day" warned Weng.

One major source of sewage is factories along the banks of the river, which often discharge untreated waste directly into the river.

Statistics from the Ministry of Environmental Protection show that some 10,000 chemical plants, about half of the nation's total amount, are located along the banks of the Yangtze.

In addition, huge amount of household sewage from the cities along its banks have been discharged into the river with little or no treatment, forming an evident belt of pollution. The belt is 50-100 meters wide in the middle section of the river and up to 170 meters wide in the downstream section.

Moreover, 13 large freshwater lakes spanning 100 square kilometers in the mid- and downstream sections of the Yangtze have suffered serious eutrophication due to climatic factors or human activities. As a result, large amounts of algae proliferate in the lakes, damaging their ecological balance and leading to serious water pollution."

Clues...

This is most probably caused by mining runoff into the waterways..perhaps rust and iron tailings..could also be chemicals from factories in the area..algae bloom?

Many explanations...nothing extraordinary here folks...move along.

That's the key. It's happening in diverse places and none have ever been explained or followed up on. Even the freaking oil spill in the gulf turned red!
