Japan has created a crisis headquarters in response to the incident. This is the latest in a series of diplomatic rows between China and Japan centered on control of the Senkaku, or Diaoyu in Mandarin, islands. The ships were dispatched “to assert the country’s sovereignty” to the tiny archipelago in the South China Sea, which on Tuesday Japan had purchased from a private owner, ignoring Chinese territorial claims. YOu cant purchase a border if it is dispute. Maybe you can't, but Japan did. China may take them to court. Oh, wait... |

If Obama's that weak wouldn't they prefer him to be in power for 4 more years, rather than risking Romney winning the election over a humiliated Obama? Under international law, territorial waters extend up to 12 nautical miles from the coast of a landmass. Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda vowed to maintain utmost vigilance after the coast guard said that two Chinese maritime survey ships entered Japanese waters around 6:18 a.m. They were followed by a group of four other ships that sailed into the waters claimed by Japan shortly after 7 a.m., the coast guard said. The first two ships left the waters around 7:48 a.m., the c... [link to www.japantoday.com] |

Xi made his first public communication through state media on Thursday but has not been seen in public for 13 days. Asked if Panetta was due to meet Xi, Pentagon spokesman George Little said, "This is not something I would comment on. This is for the Chinese to discuss, of course." The US delegation looked forward "to meetings with top Chinese military leaders" but "the itinerary hasn't been locked in stone," Little told a news conference. "We believe this will be a very productive and cordial visit, one that will advance our shared goals of a more transparent and even more viable relationship with the Chinese military," he added. Panetta's trip marks his third to Asia in 11 months, underscoring President Barack Obama's bid to "rebalance" Washington's focus towards the region. Despite the much-publicized tilt to the Asia-Pacific, the Obama administration has been forced to confront recurring turmoil in the Middle East, with a deadly attack on the US consulate in Libya on Tuesday by Islamist militan.. (OP) User ID: 12820979 United States 09/13/2012 09:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What is Taiwan sending? Apparently they are livid about Japan's seizure of the islands. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23411913 TAIPEI, Taiwan: Two Taiwanese coastguard ships on Thursday set sail for waters near a disputed archipelago in the East China Sea, officials said, amid an ongoing territorial row among Taiwan, China and Japan. The vessels are expected to get around 20 to 30 nautical miles (37 to 56 kilometres) west of the disputed Diaoyu islands to offer round-the-clock protection for Taiwanese fishermen, said a coastguard official. The move came after Japan announced on Tuesday that it had completed its planned purchase of the islands, which are known as Senkaku in Japanese and are also claimed by Taiwan and China. Taipei has recalled its envoy to Japan to protest the Japanese move while Beijing has dispatched two patrol ships to assert its sovereignty following the purchase. The islands have long been at the centre of a territorial dispute between Japan and China and a major row was sparked last month after activists from both sides sailed to the archipelago. Japan arrested 14 activists who sailed to the area from Hong Kong, triggering protests by China and Taiwan, and moved swiftly to deport them. Days later Japanese activists landed on one of the islands and raised a Japanese flag. The islands, which are around 160 kilometres (99 miles) from Japan's Okinawa chain and about 200 kilometres from Taiwan, lie on vital shipping lanes and are believed to lie near potentially rich gas fields. Observers said national pride was also a major reason for the acrimony in the dispute. Texans are arrogant Texans; but you would be too if you were correct all the damn time! |
