Revitalizing our country that is trashed creates jobs. People would be needed to remove the crap and recycling centers would need to be opened and people hired to sort the crap from the recyclable and burn the crap crap cleanly making energy, which would require more people to be hired. The recycled stuff could be sold or reused. That's just 1 way to create jobs, with some thinking, we could come up with hundreds of new ways to create jobs. |

Businessman spends $20,000 to clean eyesore lot in Philly and city threatens legal action? I suppose I have a differing opinion from the majority here. If the guy only cleaned the lot up and the city pitched a fit, I would side with the guy. However, he decided to not only clean it, but also to build (and place) what he thought was attractive (and oddly enough, something that would be helpful to his newly opening business). I believe he went too far when he began the construction project for property that he did not even own. He should have just cleaned up the property and billed the city for the cost. (maybe point out their own city ordinances for property upkeep and maintenance) If some schmuck decided that they didn't like the shaggy bushes in my front lawn and cut them down (replacing them with what they deemed attractive) there would be legal action on my part. The guy just went too far. (Of course, that is just my opinion.) *Edit: I am not saying the guy was wrong to act, just that he went to far. The last thing I want to do is discourage people from trying to make their part of the country a "better" place. Just that they think, before they act. I understand your point and agree in the most part. If it were private property, then no he should not have done anything more than clean the lot up. Since it's owned by the city, it's public property and the city should have kept up with it's responsibilities. There has to be more to the story. Why is the lot so important to the city and why is it so important for it to be a dumping ground? Why won't they sell it to someone? Don't they need money? It's not like it's beach front property. |

If they have the money to sue, then they had the money to clean the place and/ or pay him for the services. More posturing by the anemic politicians. If he had bribed them under the table, probably nothing would have been said. |

He looked at me and said are you kidding ? Case dismissed !! Thats how bad this eyesore property was. That IS a great ending. In Santa Barbara, Ca the local Harley davidson dealer bought a piece of property on the side of the 101 (the famous Pacific Coast Highway). The building, one of the first things you see when you drive into town from the south, was a run down aluminum storage place for an old car collection. Harley came in and completely fixed the place up. Repaired the siding, new paint, a new flagpole with a HUGE American flag. Made the place look classy and alive again, instead of like a rusty old dilapidated storage shed. Long story short, a wealthy woman who lived across the highway on the beach, was an attorney for SB before she retired and "didn't like motorcycles" so she tried to have the place closed. She said it was a noise nuisance. Harley paid over $100,000 to have a noise assessment test. The shop is closed on Sunday's and Monday's and after a year they found there was no difference in the "noise" from opened to closed days. She persevered and because of her political clout, got the shop closed. Over a dozen people lost their jobs and the city lost untold monies on taxes. just because an old busybody "didn't like motorcycles" and had too much power. The same thing happened with dogs. All the restaurants and cafe's in town (SB) that had outdoor seating allowed them, without there EVER being even a slight problem. Another RETIRED city attorney went out to breakfast on a Sunday, didn't like dogs, and used their clout to force the city to not allow them in all outdoor eating area's. The eateries are all paying the price because so many people enjoyed bringing their dogs to meet with their friends and sit outside and enjoy a meal. I'm glad that you were a success in court. Why are we paying so many legal costs for all this frivolous BS? And hurting businesses, jobs and losing taxes in the process. |
