Hiya all,

i guess we all remember the great show by Comet Lovejoy and the survive of Perihelion

The perihelion is the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid or comet where it is nearest to the sun.

The word perihelion stems from the Greek words "peri" (meaning "near") and "helios" (meaning "sun").

Maybe we have some new player...okay still some time but i marked my calendar^^

COMET C/2012 S1 (ISON)

Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) will get to within 0.012AU of the Sun (extremely close) at the end of November 2013 and then to ~0.4AU from Earth at the beginning of January 2014! According to its orbit, this comet will be a naked-eye object in the period November 2013 - Janaury 2014. And it could reach a negative magnitude at the end of November 2013.

We had a meteor over the UK last week that was close to a -7 and it was fuckin bright.

If this shit gets -10 and above every single person with working eyes is going to know about this thing... even blind people will know about it because everybody else will be talking about it.

With the political climate in the world at the moment, some of the religious types might take this as a sign.

What is the average / equivalent magnitude of the daytime sky? Mag -2
The unaided eye can see -4.4 mag venus, if you know where to look during the day. The full moon is -10, the sun is -26.

We have an event breaking that history will talk about for decades, and we are going to live it.

And if all those prophecies about war and doom and death and horror surrounding the sudden appearance of a previously unknown comet are all true..even a bit..we are aslo going to DIE after living to see it.

And another bright comet in March of next year?

Comet C/2011 L4 (PANSTARRS), discovered by Pan-STARRS 1 telescope on Haleakala, Maui, on the night of 2011, June 5-6, will reach perihelion in March 2013 when it will be located only 0.30 AU from the Sun and might become a bright naked eye object ( with a peak magnitude of anywhere from +1 to -1)

So even NASA are saying this is going to be likely a negative mag threshold comet, so probably naked eye visible for sure, and the people who discovered it are giving a conservative estimate of -10.6 by September next year?

Im just wondering how big this thing will look in the sky, are we talking Hale Bopp size? but potentially much much brighter?

A 17th mag. comet in the constellation of Cancer that was discovered last week and confirmed and announced today:

2012 S1 ISON (an observatory project name, not a person).
This comet will pass the sun in November, 2013 and then approach even closer to earth by Dec. 29th 2013

The projected magnitude of this comet on November 29 is going to be nearly MINUS 7 (-7.0).

Hale Bopp, according to Wikipedia, made it up to a magnitude of +2 and it was quite bright!  -7 is crazy bright.

This will be a history maker.

I remember a comet not so long ago that turned many times brighter after it exploded!

Who knows maybe this one will explode when nearing the sun!

And who knows maybe it'll even come closer to the sun as it's trajectory will be more accurate as it comes closer to the sun.
