HACIPASA, Turkey—Turkey scrambled two fighter jets to the border with Syria for the first time since July after a Syrian military helicopter bombed the Syrian border town of Azmarin, eyewitnesses said, underlining heightened tensions along the neighbors' long border.

The F-16 fighter jets flew along the border shortly after 2 p.m. local time, following heavy fighting in between rebels and Syrian government forces

According to witnesses, Turkey scrambled two fighter jets to the Syrian border in response to an army helicopter bombing the Syrian border town of Azmarin, Reuters reported.

Fighting between the Syrian government and rebels recently erupted in Azmarin, with several refugees fleeing the violence by crossing the border into Turkey yesterday. The town is approximately one kilometer from the Turkish border.

Tensions between Ankara and Damascus have run high following a brief cross-border shelling attack last week, and after Turkey grounded a Syrian commercial jet en route from Moscow to Damascus on Wednesday over suspicions the plane was carrying illegal cargo.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Ergodan alleged that the Moscow-to-Damascus commercial flight diverted to Ankara on Wednesday was carrying munitions for the Syrian army.

"It is absolutely clear who sent the cargo and who was going to receive it. This was munitions from the Russian equivalent of our Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation being sent to the Syrian Defense Ministry," Erdogan told journalists, referring to the state-run Turkish manufacturer that supplies the country's army.

"The examination [of the seized cargo] is continuing and the necessary will follow," Erdogan said.
Syria accused Ankara of ‘air piracy,’ and insisted that none of the plane’s cargo was illegal.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said it has not received an explanation from Turkey detailing the plane’s cargo and its seizure. Moscow slammed Turkey for sending F-16s fighter jets to force the plane to land, endangering the lives of the flight’s 35 passengers.

1432 GMT: Syria. ANOTHER anti-aircraft base has been sieged in the last 24 hours. Multiple sources suggest that this very large base near Salqin, Idlib province (map) was attacked by FSA units, and as much as 70% of the base is now in FSA control. In and of itself, in light of the other headlines today, this would be hugely significant. But most importantly, the base is literally a few kilometers from Azmarin, which Turkey scrambled jet fighters to protect from Assad helicopters. This move may not have even been possible if the Salqin base was not first partially or largely neutralized.

I really WISH they actually had a nuclear bomb, that way there would be at least one single deterrent against Netanyahu and his warmongers.

Israel has hundreds of nuclear warheads, and according to their "samson option" strategy they're willing and able to use them on a massive scale (including european cities aswell) which would bring us a nice long and devastating cold nuclear winter.

The danger of global nuclear war is real. Be it as escalation in Middle east going into chemical and then nuclear and including more and more countries. Be it as preemptive strike from one of the several nuclear powers (doesn't have to be USA or Russia, there are others capable). It won't be announced on CNN to happen after 3 days, because the surprise attack is a key element of any strategy that pretends for success. Once started, it will be a race with time to launch more nukes before the adversaries, to assure survival so to speak.

The consequences for the planet will be the most tragic. Nuclear winter will make the life as we know it extinct on planet Earth. This is not a hypothesis of a crazy scientist but a real model based on latest scientific measurements. In 2007 a new study published in Geophysical Research [link to en.wikipedia.org] proved the early scenarios of Carl Sagan and others. It studied two cases: for all nuclear stockpile or only 1/3 of it, with almost identical results as climate response. See the video
