Now it's time to diet. We are saving a ton of money and feel better. We both smoked for 35 years. Hitting the Y soon to start swimming. I take it one day at a time. If I can do it, anyone can, really, my cigs were my best friend. You will gain weight, but IMO worth it to quit the cigs. It's all good in the hood. Congratulations to you and your husband. You're on the road to a new freedom and infinite possibilities await you. You've got this. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 68972139 South Africa 04/19/2015 03:20 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I tried to stop a couple of times, documented on this thread and then finally manged to quit in August of last year. Going oN 8 months now and feeling great. The reason I wanted to quit was that I found myself increasingly becoming out of breath. At 42 years of age with 3 daughters, one a mere baby, I had to ensure that I would be around a lot longer. I've always been a big muscular guy and feeling out of breath is an absolute horrid feeling. After I quit I picked up about 22lbs, mostly over the last December. I suddenly woke up to the fact that I was becoming seriously overweight. After December I decided that I needed to lose weight, as I was at 290 lbs and 240 lbs is a good weight for me. So I started jogging. It was disheartening to see that I could only go for about 200m, before getting out of breath, which would then force me to walk, before jogging for a little bit again. I have now lost 40lbs and am getting the definition back that I had when I was still doing weight lifting. I recently had to stop jogging, as I developed achilles tendonitis due to all the hills in the area where I live. Just before I stopped I was doing 3.6 km in the hills without stopping. I found this recovery quite unexpected as I knew that damage to the lungs was permanent. Is there anyone else that also experienced this????????? My achilles tendons are better, but not 100%. My pathetic tendons have now forced me to do high intensity training, which I should have started to do in the first place, rather than slogging for miles. 10 Minutes of 100% balls to the walls sprints with walks in between. Gives better fitness, makes you quicker, builds muscle instead of destroying them, lots more calories burnt etc. I AM VERY GRATEFUL THAT I HAVE MANGEDED TO QUIT SMOKING, AS I KNOW I WOULD HAVE DIED A HORRIBLE DEATH WITHIN THE NEXT 5 YEARS HAD I NOT. So yes, many thanks to Desert Fox for this thread and the other contributers to this thread. By the way Hawk, you were my inspiration, as you were a couple of months ahead of me. |

Wow dude... thats great!! I have been up and down on the smoking roller coaster.. This time of year gets hard for me..because I really do enjoy a cold beer on a hot summer day... and usually cold beer leads to smoking. Really going to try and get through this summer. Been going to the gym, and can attest to the fact that your lungs do heal.. my cardio is probably at the highest level it has ever been.... Now to get through these next few months... going to use this post as my inspiration. Thanks man! Pickle Suprise! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 15438915 United Kingdom 05/11/2015 05:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | TWO DAYS AGO I WENT PARTIALLY BLIND IN ONE EYE DUE TO SMOKING ! Sorry to shout, but as this is my first posting on this thread I wanted to get peoples attention (GRIN) I am a woman in her 60's who smokes home rolled ciggies, works from home, so pretty much a chain smoker.Have smoked since I was 18 BUT very heavily the last ten years or so. I simply wasn't bothered. I like nicotine, i loved smoking, couldn't care less about health warnings. I can afford tobacco.Pretty fit, no health problems, zero eye problems. Last fFiday I woke up with a shady area in the bottom part of my eye. I thought it was a bit odd but I wasn't overly concerned at first. Saturday my sister visited. She has been partially sighted from birth and will soon loose it all. SHE FREAKED OUT ! She was very angry at me, and just to make her feel better I made an appointment to see an optician. This morning 10am saw an optician. He phoned my local hospital for an immediate appointment. (still a bit smug and unconcerned at this point) until he said "how soon can you get there?" I now panic! I have to call in family and friends to help as drops in my eyes mean I can not drive. I need my car driven home, i need my dogs transported to my dads (food, crates etc) I need someone to contact my boss ! I have to get someone to step in and cancel my work appointments. I get to hospital. I don't know all the right terms for these tests BUT it will give you an idea. First. standard eye tests. One eye, lower half cloudy and blind. Others Great. Second. Photographs of eye, lower half of one showing almost no blood supply. Third. an ultra sound scan (Like a baby) scan Fourth. (scary) Brain MRI scan (starting to think brain tumour) Fifth. Blood test results. !!! Build up of cyonide ! I quite arrogantly dismissed the term carciogens when all the anti smokers give voice BUT it appears that the blood results show I have a very high amount of cyonide in my blood coupled with nearly zero vitamin B. OK. This post to GLP is my very FIRST acknowledgement that I MUST stop smoking. I am such a confirmed smoker that immediately after I left the opticians my FIRST call was to get some nicotine chewing gum as I knew I couldnt go to hospital without "supplies" I am back home now after 12 hours of tests, my dogs are with my family and this is the first time I have been alone in over 20 years. (getting a bit emotional now, but anyone who has a labrador, or little daschund terrier will understand how I miss them) BUT to get back to the thread. I HAVE stopped smoking as of NOW. I have got nicotine chewing gum. I miss the "click" of a cigarette lighter so i have sent off for one of those dog clicker things. I have sent for a hypnosis book and CD from an english man called paul mckenna who I have found very helpful in the past. I did think about starting a new thread, and I may do in future BUT I think that the longevity of your thread shows that many people need help, as do I. and may see my "48 hour warning" I may post a new thread, but to be honest,I would rather contribute to an on going and effective thread. I see that my problem could be reversible. I want my dogs back ! Very scared ! BUT I AM AN ARROGANT SO AND SO ! Thanks for reading. Please let me know if you think I should start an extra thread. Any and all comments would be helpful at this time. Thank you |
