But few know that it was Joe Biden who drafted the core provisions which were included in that bill … in 1995. CNET reported in 2008: Months before the Oklahoma City bombing took place, Biden introduced another bill called the Omnibus Counterterrorism Act of 1995. It previewed the 2001 Patriot Act by allowing secret evidence to be used in prosecutions, expanding the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and wiretap laws, creating a new federal crime of “terrorism” that could be invoked based on political beliefs, permitting the U.S. military to be used in civilian law enforcement, and allowing permanent detention of non-U.S. citizens without judicial review.* The Center for National Security Studies said the bill would erode “constitutional and statutory due process protections” and would “authorize the Justice Department to pick and choose crimes to investigate and prosecute based on political beliefs and associations.” Biden himself draws parallels between his 1995 bill and its 2001 cousin. “I drafted a terrorism bill after the Oklahoma City bombing. And the bill John Ashcroft sent up was my bill,” he said when the Patriot Act was being debated, according to the New Republic, which described him as “the Democratic Party’s de facto spokesman on the war against terrorism.” *** Biden’s proposal probably helped to lay the groundwork for the Bush administration’s Patriot Act. [snip] They had to have a reichstag burning event before the "patriot act" could be passed. Conveniently 9/11 happened. So a bill that "eroded" constitutional processes and protections was written under clinton and passed under shrub. And there are people who maintain the two "parties" have different goals. |

[snip] No, the bills look nothing like each other. So where is your point? You are speculating here on a ridiculous topic. If anyone wants to be horrified by the idea of losing ones Constitutional Rights you only need to look at the work of the GOP fueled Security and Military Industrial Complexes which go out of their way to allow your lives to be monitored, and your privacy to be violated all in the name of "keeping you safe". Sure it is naive to think that Democrats are saints as they are often as corrupt, but at least they actually vote against this type of stuff with some regularity. Trying to create things out of thin air to help muddy the waters? |

He should be "Fired"! And this laughing hyena should know better, but he thinks like the others that he runs this world, when it is clear, that he does not, along with the others. I guess He does not Fear God. |

Trying to create things out of thin air to help muddy the waters? So obama didn't sign the NDAA? Hasn't prosecuted whistle blowers? Closed guantanamo? didn't try to take over the internet? Didn't enhance the tsa? I'm having a little trouble here with mainstream status quo partisanship. It really doesn't seem like there is much difference. Actually the bill written under clinton and passed under shrub are almost exactly alike. The "patriot act" under shrub was all the better for TPTB because they finally got the excuse they needed in order to pass such a disgrace. 9/11 was that excuse and justification. |

No doubt they are all bad. I agree, but I have a whole lot less faith in the GOP when it comes to protecting any individual rights or societal rights outside of Gun ownership which is obviously a double edged sword and very one dimensional. |
