I am 20, living with a parent, and can't find even a job at fast food restaurants despite having good work experience as a custodian at an elementary school for over a year as my first job, and being exponentially more intelligent than any of the other employed people my age that I have come across.

I have found that when you are smarter than your employer you are a threat to even their position so they choose half-there, brain dead teenage materialists over a well-informed, well spoken individual who can hold a conversation for longer than 5 minutes without diverting to meaningless celebrity/sports BS.

It is pretty sad that the world is the way it is, and I just really hope something happens to put all the dumb fucks in their place.. even if it means I will have to face the same consequences. (Such as nuclear annihilation, alien invasion, geological catastrophe, etc.) As much as it would be worth it, I just don't think that such mercy exists. The Demiurge feeds off of our pain, and I am sick and tired of fighting against it only to be fucked over.

Oh and the reason I am unemployed was because I quit to move back in with a parent in another state so I could eventually find another job and have a place to stay to save up for a car, since paying for rent at my last place took all my money. I wasn't fired or anything like that... just trying to better my current situation since it wasn't going anywhere without the ability to save for an extinction machine... ahem, I mean vehicle.

The figures make sense to me. No wonder there is so much wishing for doom to destroy the awful lives some of you must live.

I run my own small business and make for myself between £80 and £100k a year, thats $128k - $160k for you yanks.

If you are doing education that doesnt directly relate to a well paid job, stop! In other words if you are training to be a doctor, architect, lawyer, vet carry on. If you are doing a degree in cooking, Japanese studies, womens studies, English and so on. STOP wasting your time and money.

All you will end up with is an unemployable qualification and a big debt around your neck. I have no degree. I stopped at A-Levels as I was sick of having no money, it has never been a problem to me.

Anyway, dont want to turn this into a big rant. But surfing GLP is never going to do more than entertain you, get out there and make something of yourself.

I think the poll just shows more who is unemployed since it is us who sit at home and browse with nothing else to do.
Once I get a car I am starting my own cleaning business until I finish writing a book I have in mind.

Stop applying for these sort of jobs. The people there dont see you as a threat, the see you as someone who is too good for this position and will get bored and quit and therefore have wasted their time. They are doing you a favour.

Apply for jobs with small businesses. Small businesses desperately need people who are intelligent, who dont get stuck at every problem and have to ask for help.

Kids dont like to hear this, but get a hair cut, have a shave, take out any piercings, wear minimal makeup if a woman, dress smartly and cleanly.

Yes, in an ideal world you should be able to look and dress how you like and people should be able to see past that and realise you are still a special person. In the real world, small businesses want to look professional, and that means you have to look professional too. Its just the way that it is.

lost everything (sold it to live) freed me to move to where jobs are - happens to be north wi. - vacation land for us flat lander il. people - bummer, i found a job where i used to drive 6 hours to vacation... fate!

I feel sorry you can't balance your life with things you *love* to do, no matter the sacrifices you have to make. Sure, time off is nice, and many of us are some way or another taking "pretirements" these days...but some of us just need less to do what we love...a 100K a year + career is not for everyone.

In my experience things you love to do, or even jobs you enjoy dont pay much. I did one of those jobs for quite a few years, earning enough to survive but not enough to save.

Real happiness comes from freedom, and real freedom comes from having the money behind you to do whatever you want.

I am an unemployed single female. Living with family. I have a disabled daughter that I take care of, full-time. I am enrolled in online college. I can't work because I take care of my daughter full-time, with no help. I've signed up for all the help that there is out there, and I've just been sitting on wait lists for years. I can't really do much else, but wait.

Spent 4.5 years getting a degree. Worked same job as when in school for another 6 months, laid-off. Started job search anew with degree and references, no luck. Got a new job very hard work no degree necessary, lasted 10 months. Laid-off. Could not find a part-time or any position to save my rear.
Daughter works and mcds and gets robbed, time cards changed, etc. Son works at home fixing computers and electronics. If a kind person was not sent to me by Heavenly power I would be under a tree.
