Re: Are you Unemployed? (LIVE DOOM)
I've been out of work since spring and am living high on the hog with my great one hundred and ten dollars a week unemployment. With a house payment, taxes,, gas for the car, food, and insurance there isn't much left for fun stuff. Also my wife has cancer and CHF. Both daughters are adults and gone but both have CHF and the older one is diabetic. It doesn't really matter who wins the election. I'm screwed until the cold weather gets here and I can hope for a job as a cold weather test driver. After 12 years of driving I'm up to eight fifty an hour with no benefits. And I have friends who are in a lot worse shape then me

This is why I teach people to have multiple streams of income...I don't see how they can live on the edge with debt and then only maintain one stream of income expecting it to never dry up.

Falling down is a part of life, getting back up is living. ~

Life is about choices, you get to make them each and every day of your life. ~

Capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse.~

Only in America... do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poloi' in Greek meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'.~

“When a government is dependent for money upon the bankers, they and not the government leaders control the nation. This is because the hand that gives is above the hand that takes. Financiers are without patriotism and without decency.”

I am 20, living with a parent, and can't find even a job at fast food restaurants despite having good work experience as a custodian at an elementary school for over a year as my first job, and being exponentially more intelligent than any of the other employed people my age that I have come across.

I have found that when you are smarter than your employer you are a threat to even their position so they choose half-there, brain dead teenage materialists over a well-informed, well spoken individual who can hold a conversation for longer than 5 minutes without diverting to meaningless celebrity/sports BS.

It is pretty sad that the world is the way it is, and I just really hope something happens to put all the dumb fucks in their place.. even if it means I will have to face the same consequences. (Such as nuclear annihilation, alien invasion, geological catastrophe, etc.) As much as it would be worth it, I just don't think that such mercy exists. The Demiurge feeds off of our pain, and I am sick and tired of fighting against it only to be fucked over.

Hail the Almighty Dollar, praise Obamney, and sign me up for FEMA extermination.

That is all.

Son, I'm actually sympathetic for you. I own my business and run a ranch, however, I was a paramedic for ten years. I also have worked home construction, executive protection, and club security.

I will be the first to say, retail and sales management types hate anyone they deem a threat. They are terrified of them! Terrified.

Son, look at the trades, electrical, plumbing, welding, power plant operation. Yes, they are having a tough time, as well. However, you will find work.

This is my post from last night, though my IP number changes everyday.. so it's probably different today. But it's me.

Fortunately, I haven't started college yet. I was going to wait until after 2012 anyway to see how things look economically and politically before getting myself into any debt.

I already do a lot of research and studies on my own and have amassed a large collection of books, particularly occult and politics books since I like to research the history and symbology of it all.

Someone else said to work for small businesses, which I have thought very little of since I figured most small businesses will only hire friends and family members... but I think I will give it a shot since it makes sense that they are looking for well-equiped deserving individuals that will be a good asset to the company.

Thanks for the advice. This is why I like GLP!

And I know some disenchanted GLP tard will ask how I have books if I was saving for a car while unemployed in some rude way, so I will say now that I was buying at least a book every pay check off of eBay when I could find them for cheap.
(though my Kenneth Grant books were far from cheap.. but they were an investment)

That, and I have thousands of .pdf files.

Small businesses can be good.. They definitely dont only hire friends and family - especially when they need someone with special skills - or a entry level person they dont have to pay extra because they are someone's brother...

Not sure how many small businesses need occult knowledge, but I do know almost 100% of small businesses are looking for help with on-line communications and computers in general - from knowledgable well spoken general purpose office staff that can troubleshoot computer issues, through to actual IT staff for supporting small groups...

If I hadnt been a serious computer nerd from a young age, I know I would have made less, but I also know I still would have gotten the opportunities I got if I had a small fraction of that computer knowledge.

Metaphysics, occult, etc... It is hard to take those interests and make a career around them unless you consider a serious academic approach.. The other approach is mostly either being a scam artist, or maybe writing books - but your book will definitely sell better if you have a degree and academic achievements to bolster your position.

If you want some really specific ideas how to use a general level of computer skills and a above average affinity for knowledge and communication to make a reasonable income, here are some ideas.

1) Learn WordPress - install it on a localserver, do it.. Dont become a web developer or designer.. But learn WordPress - it is a great foot in the door to be a 'general office\web updater'... Web updates can be surprisingly liberating change from answering phones and dealing with people!

2) Learn general troubleshooting for computers.. Again - dont become a expert IT person, get the knowledge needed to support yourself and your coworkers without the consultants or IT being bothered... Companies love this

3) Learn to present your best skills in your resume, even if you dont have experience in them.
- One word to the wise: have a well spoken and dependable friend pretend to be an ex employer to hilight some core skills, if you feel you have the chops, but havent had an opportunity to shine.

4)Consider choosing something you can do inexpensively to improve your job prospects, and do it.. One solid idea I can recommend is "Comptia A+ Certification". Combine having that with having a good ability to talk and relate to people, and you can probably find a 12-15$/hr job fixing computers, in almost anywhere in america.

For resumes, consider a 'achievement based' format for each job listing, even if you dont feel your achievements were all that great.

For example, "Worked at a counter all day serving people" sounds a lot dumber than "Extensive experience in customer service roles including retail and food handling" or "While part of the retail team at _______ WE succesfuly, fostering a spirit of team work that I continue to value'.

Dig deep..

I was a freak.. I am 32. I loved things like Skinny Puppy, Nirvana, Squarepusher, the KLF, William Burroughs and other beatnicks, Thompson, etc.. Very literary. Very into computers - and by all appearances, basically a total f-up and unemployable....Still, in my entire working life, from age 14, I never worked for less than $17.50 an hour.. And was even in the librarians union for a few years in high school - on account of computer expertise getting me in their IT department - unions can be great to be in.., Mine was $12 a month for dues, and I got vacation and real healthcare.. Library jobs can be notoriously hard to get though, because they can be extremely plesant places to work for certain fairly common personalities..

At somepoint I read a few thousand books, including going through the typical 'now i will read the french lit, now i will read russian lit, now i will read history books about revolution, now i will read jung, now i will read the more obscure clemmens books, etc...' I am not sure I suggest this unless you are prepared to be disapointed with the real applicability of this information and experience... In other words, only do it for yourself - it may put more wedges between you and "success" than it puts legs-up.. No one likes to have a smart-ass bringing up Russian Revolution, Conspiracies, etc... At least not in the first week on a job!

Re: Are you Unemployed? (LIVE DOOM)
also, dude.. you are 20... dont be too afraid if you dont want to have a permenant career doing whatever it is you can find a way to make a living at....

it took time and ups and downs to arrive at a solid and motivational career and life goal set, but i have found them, and i am glad i didnt do the other paths i had considered..

i went from the computer nerdery i described above, to a art, music, and design career... that has taken me around the world for free, given me the chance to work with teams of amazing artists, architects, engineers, designers, etc..

i did this while also 'doing whatever the hell i want'.

i performed live techno music at rave parties for 3 or 4 years in the early 2000s..

i lived in a giant loft full of metal working machinery that i bought.

Then I re-embraced my desire to invent products, changed from general design school to industrial design, and have since then done the things listed above... Though the corporate world... it will chew you up, and lay you off on your birthday.... (Happened to me.. was the straw that sent me on my own.. which i mentioned in a previous post)...

Good luck!

Re: Are you Unemployed? (LIVE DOOM)
The figures make sense to me. No wonder there is so much wishing for doom to destroy the awful lives some of you must live.

I run my own small business and make for myself between £80 and £100k a year, thats $128k - $160k for you yanks.

If you are doing education that doesnt directly relate to a well paid job, stop! In other words if you are training to be a doctor, architect, lawyer, vet carry on. If you are doing a degree in cooking, Japanese studies, womens studies, English and so on. STOP wasting your time and money.

All you will end up with is an unemployable qualification and a big debt around your neck. I have no degree. I stopped at A-Levels as I was sick of having no money, it has never been a problem to me.

Anyway, dont want to turn this into a big rant. But surfing GLP is never going to do more than entertain you, get out there and make something of yourself.

Stop applying for these sort of jobs. The people there dont see you as a threat, the see you as someone who is too good for this position and will get bored and quit and therefore have wasted their time. They are doing you a favour.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12546839

That's sort of true. A "manager" can see you as a threat in any sort of job. For instance, I have a hard time getting a job as a software developer, a job that pays well and requires some education/experience to be done right, because the "managers" know we're all smarter than they are, and I personally have trouble keeping that a secret. Basically, I refuse to be bossed around by an idiot, I won't keep my mouth shut, and so I have a hard time getting hired. I'd start my own business, but I don't want to run a business. I want a business PARTNER who respects me (and I'll in turn respect him/her).
