The Big Dipper is 7 stars with 4 forming the rectangular ladle. The 4th star in the middle of the 7 is the brightest. The Big Dipper points to the North Star - Polaris - which is at the tip of the handle of the Little Dipper: again, 7 stars with 4 forming the rectangular ladle. Mars returns to the same point against the background of the stars every 47 years.
