Time to decide...if relying on professional entertainers for our music is going to bring the police to the door...maybe its time to say fuck the tinned tunes and make our own music like we used to. When I was 9 I played the piano, French horn and played with a couple of other instruments. That's what we had instead of computers--marangos, a steel drum, recorders, a childs harp and xylophone. And we sang. In chorus, in church (yes, the congregation sang, off tempo and out of tune but it was US, altogether, singing traditional hymns and carols) in Girl Scouts and at camp. I still remember such a great feeling sitting on a blanket by a lake at dusk in a floppy seventies hat singing rounds. The whole lake surrounded by Girl scouts, reflecting our voices. It was great. We had commercial music too. We had the Beatles. But we heard them free on AM/FM radio. Parents and others need to teach kids about folk music. Real, organic, natural, human music. That's a guy with a piano or guitar or mandolin and people singing traditional uncopyrighted public domain free music. Or making up its own. We need to teach them to point and laugh when someone gets on stage to play "star" subjecting us to their narcissistic fantasies and vocalisation training. We need real music, not Chisu or aging naked Madonna or people who are incorporate whome we play to sing FOR us. Parents can start with Christmas carols. Remember caroling parties when the neighbors answered the door with cookies and spiced cider? Or vespers? Or just folk music and singalongs? Let's bring that back. Let's get our kids singing and entertaing themselves, expressing themselves, and making their own music. Yes, I ranted. but I meant it. |
