Why are they attracted towards religion that sees their life style/choice as sin? Being gay and wanting to join a group of people who despise who you are? Am I missing something here or is that counter productive?

If you call someone names, bad names; that person will
confront the person calling out the bad names in an
effort to understand what the hate is about, where did
it come from.
It is when the gay person confronts those in the Church
that are spewing out all the anti gay hate and then he
sees behind the persons hateful words and realizes the
person spewing the hate is Gay! They engage in
conversation and sees there are many gays in the clergy.
He joins. It is a brotherhood. Very convenient for the
gay, very convenient for the Church. It has worked that
way for many many years, centuries even.
The point is; the initial contact came from trying to
understand the spewer of the hate. It's like someone
calling you out.
