Tell me again why she is demanding more!!!!!

The Aboriginal leaders are the Aboriginal people's worst enemy... that is something they need to clean up before they ask for more... If funds were properly devided, as the funds should be... there would be no problem with housing or schools or reserve roads.

This is the first time I’ve ever seen a reporter actually report the truth about an aboriginal issue. Too bad there aren’t more REAL REPORTERS.

Here's a part of what Sun News reported yesterday.

SNIP-
Spence is a master media manipulator; she knew better than to do her dieting stunt up in Attawapiskat, where it hit -33 C this week, and was accessible only by airplane. She flew to Ottawa and pitched a teepee for the benefit of the bored Parliamentary Press Gallery. She also stayed in a hotel, but that was never shown on camera — it contradicted the narrative of a chief willing to make every sacrifice for her people.-SNIP

SNIP-
Do the math: The Attawapiskat band received $34 million in 2011. And the local diamond mine spent $51 million in town. That’s $85 million, for 300 families. That’s $280,000 per family. Tax free. So how come so many in Attawapiskat live in leaky, cold shacks? Not the chief of course; she has a sturdy, well-heated house and drives an Escalade. Her boyfriend is the band manager — his contract is for $850 a day, plus expenses. Why does the band have $8.9 million in the stock market, in shares like Google and Pepsi and Exxon, but not enough money to fix some leaks? Why are there 21 politicians on the payroll of a tiny town? Why did Spence once bill the town $8,000 a month to manage the daycare?

Those are questions reporters might ask white politicians. But lucky for Spence, she’s Indian, so they don’t.

Well... here is even more for you to see:

CBC News made headlines on Monday by publicizing a scathing audit report on Attawapiskat, the impoverished northern Ontario Cree community led by hunger-striking chief Theresa Spence.

Yet you’ll find an even more searing indictment of Attawapiskat’s leadership in a televised report from the CBC’s Adrienne Arsenault. That segment is a year old, but it’s getting a new life on the internet thanks to a Twitter-based resurrection campaign led by blogger Richard Klagsbrun.

It was on the CBC also. They need to do a forensic audit. They don't even know themselves where all the money went. Theres no books and records. Wrote checks but on what.

The same thing happened here in the Okanogan. Its the cheifs and managers and council members that get the best land and get paided very well to handle the money given to them by us the Canadian taxpayers.

I would rather the money be spent here in Canada on Canadians not go oversea's but there has to be somw accountablity. I am accountable to the banks and for my mortgage. I ahev to provide reciepts for income tax. Tehy have and should have to do the same thing too.

As a people in a nation over their they need to hold there chiefs and council accountable also. Regular meetings and open books and votes on where the money is spent.

No different for any other corporation so it shall be for them.

But that is deffinately not happening! I know of 4 other reserves for sure that are in similar situations as far as, the leaders have money, furs, vacations, cars, snowmobiles, boats and two houses, but the actual reserve population has nothing.

Trouble is that as a Canadian if I try to tell others those facts I called a biggot. How's that for mass brainwashing?

Sadly in the "idle No More" campaign the cause is just and every Canadian should be standing up against Harper selling out Canda from beneath us.

Thanks to Chief Spence the focus has become the Natives and their poverty. Canadians have been made to feel so guilty that you can.'t even talk to most of them.

We are aware of many aboriginal people who have a house on the reserve and a house in the city... they collect from both ends. Many journalists are aware of this fact, but you never see that in a newspaper or hear about it on the news.

That is why I was so surprised to see actual journalism about aboriginals posted in a news paper and on CBC!

Maybe more people will be educated.

I think many of the average community members are afraid to stand up and demand accountability.. From people we know, we hear that many reserves are run very tyrannically, and anyone that dares speak out, will get their "come-upins" so to speak. Sad, but true.

when i first moved to northern ontario from southern ontario i had the fullest respect for any native cause i was raised to believe we gave them a raw deal. After a couple of years living here, my mind changed. It is true that they get a lot for free, they get to try business ventures at no costs, free education, free, health, eyeglasses dental they get it all. But I blame our government for doing this to them. They have turned many into lazy blobs, and got them addicted to oxy. If they are raised like us and given the same ops as we have there is quite a difference in them, however they leave them stuck up in the bush in tiny towns run by untrained and smart but not too smart leaders. Most of the communities around Spenc do not even have hydro, a chocalate bar can cost 4.00 and then you have the parents who have no knowledge how to raise there children left over from the time they were taken from their parents and raised in residential schools. The children no nothing, are not taught nothing, and have no art of conversing. The government just like to send them money but when something breaks it stays that way. There houses grow mold, they have no proper drinking water. My step grandfather who was a native said over 50 years ago if a native wants to make something of themselves they have to get off the reserve. This holds true for them up here. LIKE I SAID I BUT THE BLAME ON THE GOVERNMENT. After all people are only human.

There are so many issues on reserves, there are many that feel they have no options, and that drives alcoholism which in turn drives gas sniffing by young children. We’ve heard from people who have witnessed young mothers, putting a gas dipped cloth in the cradle with babies. Those children don’t stand a chance in life given the fact that gas kills brain cells.

I agree 100% with you. I've seen the same. I also agree with your grandfather who says the only way the natives will make anything of themselves is to get off those reserves. They have the freedom to do so now, but they are doomed from the get go... they don't go to school on a regular basis, and cannot be failed, so there are many illiterate young people... where does an illiterate get work? They believe what they hear the fear mongers saying and cannot read to find out the truth... this really is a government generated problem that gets bigger by the day. And yes, they have learned well from the country's governments.

They need to change things on reserves themselves.. it's the only way change will work for them.

I too find the math sketchy, I want to see a forensic audit of the money trail before any judgements are made.
I read the audit report that was linked from the CBC, it was a comprehensive audit that was presented, not forensic.

I want to know if a hammer that went to the reserve cost $20 or $250 each. What contractors were hired. What were they paid. How many times was the same bridge built.

All this loosey goosey accounting on the part of the band as well as the government dept responsible for keeping tabs on the spending does not make sense.

I as a Canadian want to know exactly were all the money went.

If the band spent it all, wtf, cut them off, they have spent their inheritance, throw those that stole the money in jail.
Make an example of them.

Whichever way it went down, we the people should demand and expect a forensic audit of the money trail.

Cuz, something smells rotten in the Dominion of Canada.

Re: Starvation Strike, my foot!!! Indian Chief Spence’s reserve got $85 MILLION in 2011 for 1500 people, for 300 houses that’s $280,000.00 per house

I couldn't agree more Madame X.
The trouble is, the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, has hidden their accounting from Canadians for years... there is probably a story there as well... and then of course when the bands were asked to produce their books about 10 or 15 years ago, there was a rash of "Band Office Fires" that conveniently burned any accounting books they may, or may not have had. There is duplicity on all sides of this story and the average reserve citizen bears the brunt of it along with the Canadian tax payers.
