Let sleeping dogs lie. Let people enjoy the last six months of their life in relative peace, then spring it on them in the final week or so.

Announcing it six months prior would do nothing except create panic. Everyone would quit their jobs, the phones would stop working, the electricity, gas, etc. basically we'd be back in the Stone Age in a matter of days and then be forced to eke out a miserable existence for the next six months, only to then face our extinction.

I hate to let you in on this but...we`ve only 6 months left...GO ENJOY....

In the case of a comet or asteroid I doubt they'd be able to keep it secret because there'd be many scientists involved in projects to deter it or mitigate damage from it.

Also many amateur astronomers would see it coming, so no real possibility of secrecy.
