I JUST DUCK-TAPED MY WINDOWS -- I feel like a nutcase...
Situation:

I live in an old Victorian building in the UK. I am located on the 5th floor. My flat has BIG sash & case windows, but have always been very 'leaky' (i.e. lots of draughts). Anyway, there was a cinema built in 1920's opposite me. It ran as a going concern until about 5 years ago, but was modernised ad-hoc several times during it's history. I have fond memories of all-night halloween shows there, great fun.

Anyway, as is the way with these things, the older city-centre cinemas cannot compete with an 18-screen giant just a few blocks away. So, it went derelict for a few years.

Now, the frontage is protected as a historic building but the demolition guys arrived recently to turn it into an office-block (keeping the frontage).

Today, I see guys in tyvec one-piece overalls and masks on the roof of the old cinema. I wander down to the site and ask for the manager. He says there is Asbestos Concrete to be removed. This is apparently not very dangerous (2% asbestos) and does not even need a licenced organisation to clean it up. However, I'm not sure I believe him so I just spent 7 hours duck-taping my windows... :(

The prevailing wind at this moment is coming from the cinema.
I felt nuts; the guys on the roof were staring at me as I stood on the window-sill taping it all up.

Nutter!!

Do you think the asbestos can come through the glass?

Here we have clear plastic sheeting attached with 2 way tape to seal windows from drafts.

You're not a nut.
Hell, I'd probably stay elsewhere during the demo.

Where does the ventilation come from into your flat?
I'd worry about that more than drafty windows.
We all breathe the same air.

I don't have A/C, if that's what you mean. In the UK, ventilation just means opening windows (which now, I won't want to do for at least 5 months..)

The ceilings are pretty high (12 feet or so) so I don't tend to get problems with condensation because there's a lot of air volume in the flat.

I'm not really too scared about going out; but it's different in your home

Just do what we do every winter.

Cover your windows in clear plastic shrink wrap, then blow dry.
Instant extra window, sealed for your protection against the elements.

Unfortunately, if you have an air driven hvac system it will pull the air from outside and you will still end up with some circulating throughout the building.

If you have steam heat, no worries.

Asbestos is some gnarly stuff. Don't worry about what the demolition people think, they'll be dead before retirement anyway.

The first name for Duct Tape was DUCK. During World War II the U.S. Military needed a waterproof tape to keep the moisture out of ammunition cases. So, they enlisted the Johnson and Johnson Permacel Division to manufacture the tape. Because it was waterproof, everyone referred to it as “duck” tape (like water off a duck’s back). Military personnel discovered that the tape was good for lots more than keeping out water. They used it for Jeep repair, fixing stuff on their guns, strapping equipment to their clothing... the list is endless.

After the War, the housing industry was booming and someone discovered that the tape was great for joining the heating and air conditioning duct work. So, the color was changed from army green to the silvery color we are familiar with today and people started to refer to it as “duct tape*.” Therefore, either name is appropriate.

It's good to feel like a nutcase. The nutters that don't are the real worry.

Now if you'd wrapped yourself up in duck tape THAT would be different..

It takes a layer of thinfoil onto the windows to fully qualify for a real woowoo, some duct tape won't do.

I would suggest a hepa filter air cleaner, since you will be closing yourself up for an extended period of time.
Think stagnant air!

I have Progressive, which was made by Sears. Nice, and some ionize,
as well. Any hepa air cleaner should improve the quality of your life.

Here is one like mine, but from...
