Pictures of America's youth in the early 20th century when children ran barefott instead of playing X boxes
These fascinating pictures of American and Canadian youngsters in the first half of the 20th century capture an almost forgotten age of innocence and the simplest of pleasures.

The photographs, from the archives of the National Geographic magazine, show children from around two or three up until their early teens and give a fascinating glimpse into what life was like for youngsters without the all trappings of the modern world which we now take so much for granted.

These are clearly poor kids, but see how healthy they look! Such is progress.

See these kids are happy and love each other.

See the little boy with his arm around the girl next to him?

There's a lot of truth in your statement.

During this time frame there also wasn't rampant crimes, gangs on every street, multi-cultural bullshit, and the liberal/progressive/communist ideals that are shoved down everyone's throat these days

We could not run around barefoot, or we would get the "ground itch"

Ah, the good old days...

[link to docsouth.unc.edu]

About one-third of the people of North Carolina are suffering with Hookworm disease and consider their trouble due to some other disease. Hookworm disease frequently causes headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, paleness, easily tired out in feet and legs, poor appetite for breakfast, indigestion, heartburn, stunted growth, and poor progress in school work on account of poor memory. If you have had ground itch or dew poison you should be examined, as this is the first sign of the disease. It takes about one drop of blood daily to feed each worm

Canada looks like it has less hookworm.

Yea I rmember that when I was a kid. People used to let their dogs run loose in the neighborhood back then. Man we were always stepping in dog shit I mean a day did not go by when you or one of your buddies wouldn't step in dog shit. The worst would be stepping in a warm fresh one when you were barefoot. Although cleanup was easier than digging the dog shit out of the grooves in your sneaker soles with a stick. Ah the good ol days.

You're breaking my heart, with this......remembering my own "barefoot days," when the sun always seemed to be shining....the selective memory of youth.....

To this day, I can't smell freshly mown grass or barbecue without being thrown back to my childhood.

Absolutely, its is obvious they are the main reasons the USA has turned to shit. Although, USA always had a separate church and state, those people did get welfare (handouts) people had abortions and then died because of them.

So i guess you're left with Gays.

Gays ruined america. You can't fault your thinking. And that kind of thinking makes the USA as great ass it is today.

Did not exist back then.

You want a real culprit?
It's that non-interactive box or screen in your house,
that has told America what to think, what to eat, what
to wear, who to vote for, for over half a century.

The interactive internet is undoing some of the damage
that the greatest brainwashing tool in history has done,
but it may be too late to regain our freedoms that have
been lost.

They are happy, healthy, none of them are overweight, they help and love their parents, they work all the time...

...and technology is a good thing..?

Maybe we need a few parasites?

[link to www.scienceinschool.org]
Findings like those in this study are throwing the definition of a parasite into confusion. Parasites are supposed to take what they need, harm their host in the process, and give nothing in return. In contrast, organisms called mutualists provide a benefit to their host and receive some benefit in return; organisms called commensals provide a benefit to a host but do not get anything in return. What role the shark worms, which are traditionally considered to be parasites, are playing is difficult to determine. And such confusion is not unique to shark parasites; many parasites that have a penchant for using humans as hosts are also raising questions.

Is "public health" doing us a favor...?

You can still run barefoot however or whenever you wish...

I'll add to this.

It has fuck all to do with any of the things you mentioned.

What a skewered look on life you have!

It has everything to do with corporations taking over the world and forcing greed and consumerism down everyones throats for the past 50 years.

Times changed. Do you wish we all lived like cavemen and hunted for food as well? You can still do those things in the pictures but you choose not to because why?

I was born in 1959, and every day in the summer my friends and I would go swimming, and wander from beach to beach by way of the railroad tracks. As long as we were home by dinner time, we did what we pretty much wanted. We had BIG imaginations, and we were always coming up with so many different things to do. Television was around by then, but I did not live in front of it, maybe spent a couple hours in the morning watching Captain Kangaroo, Friendly Giant, Might Mouse, but I always wanted to get outside and play. Snow in the winter...barefeet in the summer...those were the days!

We were 'barefoot boy with cheeks of tan' and the summers seemed endless. That is enough. I was going to say things about the selfish 60s, the 'proud' rise of decadence, the theft of youthful innocence, honor, dignity and faith in God - but those that need to hear such things have been rendered (indoctrinated, really) unable to even conceive of any such loss. Pity.

At the time people were complaining about the Irish and other minorities forming ghettos in US cities so your multi cultural bullshit is a retarded argument.

During that time there were gangs on every street (read up on the rise of the mafia during the early 20th century).

The socialist movement in the US started in 1876 so your argument surrounding communism is retarded as well.

Learn some history before spouting nonsense.

Oh and you guys really believe you can't find a handful of pictures of happy children from the 21st century? Are you kidding me?

I would love that kind of childhood! I was born in the city and never had anything like that to do. All there is to do is find a basketball court for summer time and hockey rink for winter. Other than that there was video games and shopping malls with all the new stuff we couldn't afford.
