Music Related Question (Classical Genre)
I need some help trying to determine the appropriate name for a sub-genre I am looking for within the 'Classical Music' category.

Basically I would describe it as classical sounding music with singing, but rather than there being a single vocalist it's instead a choir or group of vocalists singing in unison/harmony. When it's men singing the sound may remind me of very old 'church' type hymns, and when it's female vocalists I would describe it as almost 'angelic' sounding. You can't even discern the lyrics but the sound of the voices in unison is very relaxing/soothing to my ears.

I don't know enough about classical music to know exactly what type of genre or sub-genre this is considered but I'm trying to determine this so I can search for some music in this style.

I browse on Amazon's mp3 site, here is their classical page:

As you can see there are many different sub-genres listed to the left. Having a hard time finding what I'm looking for.

I don't know if this is enough info for anyone to help but I figured I would try.

-thanks.

Re: Music Related Question (Classical Genre)
I would say the singing could best be described as resembling gregorian chants?

Something like this?

I have my master's in music, so I can help narrow this down for you. This is 16th century Baroque choral music.

I think the term 'choral' is what I was looking for. Started searching by that and getting some hits. I would say the type of music I'm describing (or trying to) is something along this style sound:

This helps me. Thank you.

Any other terms that I should know about that might be related to this style/genre?

Re: Music Related Question (Classical Genre)
It seems like you are liking the late Baroque-early classical sacred choral genre. I would recommend J.S. Bach St Matthew's Passion, [link to www.classicsonline.com]

Mozart's Requiem,

Handel's Messiah,

And a small side note; the angelic "female" voices were originally sung by prepubescant boys. Women were not allowed to sing in choirs or operas, so they would use boys who's voices hadn't changed yet and in the case of operas, they would dress them as women. There was also another group of singers called "Castrati" who were men that were castrated before puberty so as to preserve their soprano voices throughout life. Talk about dedication to their art!
