I understand it burning up in our atmosphere, but it wouldn't explode! ...It would burn up. An explosion is different than burning a rock. As it raced through the sky, the 50-foot wide chunk of space rock compressed the air ahead of it, creating the enormous temperatures that meant it exploded in a fireball somewhere between 18 and 32 miles above the ground at around 9.20am local time on Friday. Although some debris fell to earth, ‘whipping up a pillar of ice, water and steam’ and creating a 20-foot-wide crater, the damage in nearby towns was actually caused by shockwaves created by the meteor breaking the sound barrier and then exploding. Workers in the city remained busy replacing acres of windows shattered by a powerful shockwave caused by the meteor's strike, which NASA said released 500 kilotons of energy, the power equivalent to more than 30 Hiroshima bombs. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32915728 Still, that has to be the best photos yet, and that guy that took them, the luckiest photographer on the planet. That was only a small fragment that left that hole, probably the size of a basketball. the primary detonation cloud can be seen in the center of this pic: [link to en.wikipedia.org] and the explosion here: [link to sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net (secure)] |

Some in the media say this thing was the size of a car, some say it was 30 feet across and now this article says it was 50. I wonder if anyone knows for sure. User ID: 875736 United States 02/22/2013 04:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Okay. This 'meteor' burned all the way through the atmosphere, then 'exploded' then made a nice neat round hole in the ice with zero equal and opposite blowback, as a rain of small pebbles created by the 'explosion'- as another meteor does a close flyby from a completely different direction. And there just happens to be a world class photographer in the perfect position, to get world class photos in sub zero temperatures, snow etc. And the ice by the hole will support a vehicle that weighs half to three quarters of a ton, with several average 200 lb men. And, Russians never lie. NASA never lies. The media never lies. Fed.gov never lies. The shadow government doesn't exist. There are no secret weapons tests. Meteorites, smaller meteors, or shooting stars are so fast that you rarely see them for their speed. It would have hit in points of seconds if it were a meteor. |

The speed was around 40,000 mph. This has been verified to be fairly close via triangulation from videos. This is the average speed of meteors. Also, it had a downward angled trajectory of about 12 degrees. The entire portion on the meteor's brightening was over about 15 second to when it first became bright until there was no more apparent brightness. All consistent with a meteor... a biggun, but nonetheless a meteor. |

I noticed they said it was 100,000 tonnes and exploded with the force of 30 Hiroshima bombs... Slight exaggerations. It was 10,000 tonnes(still massive) and while I could find anything about the magnitude of force of the explosion... 30 Hiroshima sized bombs would have leveled the area for miles... Patience is a virtue I just can't wait to achieve - CalmShock |

Not true...detonating nukes high up to create EMPs to wreak havoc on electronics and communications but not damage the infrastructure is old school cold war stuff. It was huge as far as meteors go...blew up from the air pressure in the 30 mega-tonne range. Too high to cause real damage and without the radiation a nuke would bring so...no emp. Just a big, spectacular chunk of space rock that rightfully scared the crap outta a lot of people. |

It was a 500 KILOton explosion (Hiroshima was 12.5kt). That still only works out to 0.5 megatons though. We were both wrong... Granted, I was more wrong. Fuck.
