Wanted to put this animal die off located in Northern Nevada in an already existing thread. I think the fact it is fresh water and all the fish, not just a few or partial, died is interesting. With all the earthquakes in NV, CA and surrounding states, it makes me wonder.

This isn't the first fresh water die off I've seen. There were some here in Montana at Holter reservoir and some rivers to the west. I am sure there are more, and they're probably listed somewhere in this thread, I just can't remember at the moment.

Could be some or all of these that is causing it:

Gas emanating from the ground, such as methane, due to seismic activity.

Fertilizer run off, causing algae blooms.

Both of the above lead to oxygen depletion in the water.

Drought, leading to fires, both of which kill all the vegetation that holds the soil in place so when there's heavy rain, mudslides occur and that affects creeks and rivers in numerous ways. The water level is lowered in those creeks and rivers due to drought and by the water being used for firefighting efforts. When the water level drops the temperature goes up which kills fish. That's if they survive run off from the firefighting efforts and/or mudslides.

Then when winter rolls around the record breaking cold leads to lakes, rivers and creeks freezing faster than ever or at least getting much colder than normal.

There are many other things affected due to all of the above and more I haven't mentioned. If I did that would make this post incredibly long so I'll go ahead and sum it up here.

Something is very wrong with the planet, it's out of balance for some reason. There are many different theories and ideas as to why that is, but they are only theories and ideas and it remains to be seen what is really causing this. I think it is going to get a lot worse before it starts getting better. What that means for humanity I have no idea. I do think we are in for a wild ride until everything comes back into balance though.

Young Pelicans Found Starving In Florida Keys In Disturbing Numbers

'Dozens of young pelicans in the Florida Keys have been found starving and The Florida Keys Wild Bird Center has stepped in to help.

According to wildlife rehabilitator Amanda Margraves, the bird sanctuary, which is located in Tavernier, has seen a large influx of pelicans which are very thin and weak.

“We’re seeing at least double the amount of pelicans than normal this time of year,” Margraves told CBSMiami.com.

“They’re all juveniles, very young coming in very emaciated.”
There is no official reason why the birds are starving but there is a theory.

“We think it has to do with the lack of food in Florida Bay,” said Margraves. She explained that fishermen have been complaining recently that there’s a lack of food such as bait fish and other small fish that pelicans feed on....'

Kangaroos, emus, parrots drop dead, as Australia sizzles in record-breaking heatwave

'Animals are collapsing and falling down from the sky as Australia continues to sizzle in record-breaking temperatures. After news of 100,000 bats falling from the sky, reports of kangaroos "fainting" because of exhaustion and scorching heat have circulated in the country.

A large number of kangaroos, parrots and emus were reportedly found dead in Winton, one of the hottest spots in Queensland. Heatwave causes thousands of dead BATS to fall from the sky

'As most of the USA freezes and the UK drowns in floods, a blistering heat wave in Australia is so bad an estimated 100,000 cooked bats have fallen out of the sky, dead.

Southern Queensland is being gripped by furnace-like temperatures, said the local RSPCA.

The has in turn caused mass deaths at least 25 separate colonies have been reported since the weekend, including at Mt Ommaney, Redbank, Boonah, Palmwoods, Laidley and Gatton.

RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty says the heatwave was a significant hit to the population of bats across the state, reports the ABC news station.

"The heatwave was basically a catastrophe for all the bat colonies in south-east Queensland," he said.

"That's obviously going to have a pretty disturbing impact on those colonies and those colonies are vital to our ecosystem." The smell of bat carcasses has caused problems for locals....'

Radioactive fish continue to be caught near Fukushima

'Japan used to account for 15 percent of global fish catches, but now, nearly three years after the earthquake and subsequent tsunami which struck Fukushima's Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in March 2011, sales are plummeting in Fukushima and the surrounding prefectures, as the world focuses intently on radiation levels mounting in the Pacific Ocean's sea life.

The Japanese government-affiliated Fisheries Research Agency just announced on January 10th that it had caught a black seabream fish contaminated with 12,400 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium - an amount 124 times higher than the safety standard. Two other black seabreams were found to breach the 100 Bq/kg limit at 426 Bq/kg and 197 Bq/kg.

Stories like this only confirm that Fukushima radiation is not decreasing but continuing to accumulate. Five prefectures which catch some 40,000 tons of fish every year appear to be directly affected by Fukushima, and taking radiation measurements after a catch has become just a routine part of fishing there now. Fish being caught in the waters around Fukushima are still dangerously contaminated with high levels of radiation, and the majority of these catches get destroyed rather than end up in a market or a restaurant....'

Cracked Arctic sea ice stirs up mercury concern

'A report in the January 15 issue of Nature describes a newly-discovered process that might be pumping atmospheric mercury down to the Arctic surface. The NASA researchers say that large cracks in Arctic sea ice expose warmer seawater to cold polar air. The heat and moisture form clouds, and the vigorous mixing in the air above the cracks drive mercury in the atmosphere down to the surface. This process can lead to more of the toxic pollutant entering the food chain, where it can harm fish and animals who eat them, including humans....'

Nearly 6,000 Natural Gas Leaks Found in Washington, D.C.

'Aging pipelines under the streets of Washington, D.C., are to blame for nearly 6,000 natural gas leaks, including 12 that could have caused dangerous explosions, a new study finds.

Researchers from Duke University and Boston University mapped 1,500 road miles (2,400 kilometers) of underground infrastructure that delivers fuel to power homes and businesses in the nation's capital. Using a high-precision device to detect methane — the chief component of natural gas — the scientists discovered more than 5,893 natural gas leaks throughout the city.

The scientists also found some manholes with methane concentrations nearly 10 times greater than the threshold at which explosions can occur.

"Repairing these leaks will improve air quality, increase consumer health and safety, and save money," study lead author Robert Jackson, a professor of environmental sciences at Duke University, said in a statement. "Pipeline safety has been improving over the last two decades. Now is the time to make it even better."

After their initial findings, the researchers reported the leaks to city authorities. Yet, four months later, nine leaks were still found to be emitting dangerous levels of methane, Jackson said....'

Pathogenic plant virus jumps to honeybees

'A viral pathogen that typically infects plants has been found in honeybees and could help explain their decline. Researchers working in the U.S. and Beijing, China report their findings in mBio, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

The routine screening of bees for frequent and rare viruses "resulted in the serendipitous detection of Tobacco Ringspot Virus, or TRSV, and prompted an investigation into whether this plant-infecting virus could also cause systemic infection in the bees," says Yan Ping Chen from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland, an author on the study.

Marco island Florida had 23 whales die....also had more off coast of estero....sw Florida....over past few weeks.

25 Dead Whales Found Near Kice Island, Florida: NOAA

Necropsies began Friday morning on 25 dead pilot whales that were discovered Thursday near Kice Island in southwest Florida.

This article came out today as well. Funny thing, they don't mention anything about Fukushima or other environmental factors that may be causing this. They're blaming it on the old standby's, alcohol, tobacco and obesity.

Great Lakes ice cover spreading rapidly; see which lake set a new record

'Ice continued to build this past week on the Great Lakes due to the cold air and temperatures staying below freezing, and Lake Superior's new record shows it.

The lake is 92 percent frozen, toppling a 20-year-old record of 91 percent set on Feb. 5, 1994. That statistic helped total Great Lakes ice cover soar, and we can expect to see more form in coming days....

China reports three new bird flu deaths, toll hits 25

'Three Chinese people have died of the bird flu, the state news agency Xinhua said on Tuesday, adding to a spike in cases this year.

Two men, aged 76 and 52, died in southern Guangdong province on Monday, while a third patient passed away in eastern Jiangsu province on Saturday, Xinhua said in separate reports, citing provincial health authorities.

Two new cases were also reported – a four-year-old girl in Guangdong in stable condition, and a 59-year-old woman in Jiangsu in critical condition.

So far this year China has confirmed 115 human cases, including 25 deaths, according to a tally of reports by local authorities.

By comparison last year there were 144 infections and 46 deaths, according to official figures....'
