Louisiana Forces Homeless Shelter to Destroy 1600 Pounds of Deer Meat!!

SHREVEPORT, La. (CBS Houston) — Louisiana’s State Health Department forced a homeless shelter to destroy $8,000 worth of deer meat because it was donated from a hunter organization

We didn’t find anything wrong with it,” Rev. Henry Martin told KTBS. “It was processed correctly, it was packaged correctly.”

The trouble began last month after the Department of Health and Hospitals received a complaint that deer meat was being served at the homeless shelter. A health inspector went out and told the homeless shelter that deer meat was not allowed to be served and that is had to be destroyed.

What a waste, I butcher my own deer, and it's time consuming work, as it takes about 5 hours to go from a hanging carcass, skinning, quartering, butchering and packaging for about 30 pounds of meat per deer, that's about 43 deer wasted, and 215 hours wasted, what a bunch of assholes!

“They threw it in the dumpster and poured Clorox on it,” Martin told KTBS. “Not only are we losing out and it’s costing us money, the people that are hungry aren’t going to get as quality of food, the hunter that’s given his meat in good faith is losing out"

I hope they know who complained about having to eat deer meat! They should kick their azzes out of the shelter & refuse assistance to that person in any way form or fashion!

I agree. I eat Deer all winter. Tags and go hunt. Hang and process. Best meat. Yummy.

Venison is delicious. I have read that unless the harvested deer meat is farm raised? Then you cannot serve to the public

I don't understand it - it is just as crazy as the couple that are facing jail time for rescuing a baby deer.

NOTHING makes sense anymore.

The White House put out a warning that sequestration -- or the steep, automatic spending cuts set to take effect in March -- may result in furloughing every meat and poultry inspector for two weeks, effectively shutting down a major part of the U.S. meat industry.

Factories are required to get inspection approval before shipping out their meat. So no inspectors means no beef, pork, poultry or egg products can be processed and delivered to stores during that time.

The possible meat shortage was part of a broader warning from the Obama administration about the effect of sequestration on day-to-day life for many Americans. The meat industry would also be hurt.

I didn't read the article, just the OP, perhaps I missed something. Why do you think it was a homeless person who complained?

I was thinking more along the lines of someone who heard about it, outside of the shelter.....that or someone helping out there.



This doesn't surprise me. More and more each passing day less and less of instances like this surprise me. It is quite sad, really.

If you can support any local ranchers and farmers in you area
It taste better and is better for you.
It also keeps the money away from the greedy big grocery chains!!
