If you don't feel bad and want to help one of those people you see on the side of the road you don't have a heart. If you don't realize that some (perhaps many) of them are complete bums who live like that because they want to, refuse to work, and don't want anything but money, then you obviously haven't tried to give them some of your own lunch.

Seriously, ever try giving a street bum some food before? It's a real eye opener when they turn you down. I even told one of them I would buy them whatever they wanted at the restaurant across the street and he turned his nose up at me.

I don't see anything wrong here- he's not living off the state and he's getting his income by getting change from idiots who give it away.

I visit Chicago fairly regularly, I won't lie-we don't have visible homeless folk and it always pulls at my heart. I'm not dumb tho-instead of giving away money, I pack a few baggies filled with granola bars, candy bars, nuts, couple tea bags, etc-it's not great, but if someone was truly hungry, it would definitely satisfy the belly for a bit. I've had refusals of them too...but hey, if you can stand on a corner with a cup and people will come up and give away their money when you jiggle it, or give you a bit more if you rolled in the dirt beforehand- smart guys. Stays off government radar, still can live decently (or like this guy, $100,000/yr), not bad.

I believe that there are homeless folk out there who are legitimately hungry and are not drug seekers and/or alcoholics and that their baby really does need formula, but I'd wager that the majority of them are scam artists.

In Wash, DC they have had undercover cams video the hobos getting into brand new Lexus at the end of the night. These guys make bank!

I gave a bum a bag of used but clean long johns (thermal underwear) once.
His reaction was that of utter disgust.
This was in Detroit in December.
Seems like that would have been very much needed and appreciated.
Not so much.
He just wanted money.

this is why i don't give money to anyone begging on the street, I busted some guy the other day doing the "I ran out of gas I need money" he stood on that corner ever day asking for morning I cussed him out and told him to beat it, I haven't seen him since

and the panhandlers are showing up on this and other forums with their made up sob stories. looking for suckers.

I've given food to many and never had a turn-down or any type of rude reaction. Not doubting you, just had different experiences.

Yeah cuz if I made $400 per day (tax free) I'd probably only work maybe 3 days a week.

But then again, if stupid people were just giving me money, I might just become a work-a-holic.

I was at a ball game and a guy outside the stadium gate asked me for money. I told to wait and I'd be right back. I went to the food court and bright him back a hotdog and passed it through the fence. He gave me funny look and said what's this? I said its a hot dog. Sometimes you get what you need instead of what you want.
