Because Middle Eastern populations are rising up and toppling leaders who haven't had the balls to put Israel in its place and end the occupation of Palestine.

Once the revolutions reach Jordan, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, the entire region will be ruled by a de-facto Muslim Brotherhood autocracy that will unite the Arab armies against Israel.

Obama sees what is happening.

He's funding the civil war in Syria because it's Assad (who oversees a strong Arab army) versus Al-Qaeda (which the majority of the Arab world hates and wants to be rid of).

If Al-Qaeda wins in Syria, they're free to spread into Iraq, Turkey, Iran and all the other countries that are currently trying to get their shit together and unite against the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine and the Golan.

Remember also that the Middle East conflict is also about WATER, not just religion and Palestine. It's about access to fresh water supplies which civilians can access (to improve the quality of their health and thus their lives).

The big picture is a massive proxy war between the U.S and the Arabs over the fate of the region's people. The U.S, like Britain before it, does not want to see its brethren Israel overrun and destroyed by a united Arab army. So they're playing their favourite game "Divide and Conquer".
