If the asteroid hit at 30 degree angle like the scientists say then the chance of Mars surviving the impact was a lot higher. Judging by the elliptical shape of that colossal crater I personally think the asteroid was under 1000 miles in diameter. Regardless, whatever hit Mars was gigantic for sure.
