Re: EMP How it works - The single greatest man made threat to North America ever and North Korea has it.
March 13 2013

Please read this PDF file I found...Report of the Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from
Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack.

[link to www.globalsecurity.org]

I wrote this little abstract for GLP because knowledge is power.

Electro-magnetic pulse or EMP in short can be achieved in 2 ways, by nuclear and by non-nuclear means.
Due to the greater threat I will mostly cover the nuclear scenario. There is another way for EMPs to form and that is by solar storms but since its a natural process I will not cover this scenario here.

:EMP1:

All nuclear explosions can create EMP's but there are several factors that determine the strength of an EMP burst. If you say the yield of the bomb makes all the difference, you are deadly wrong. The main factor is the altitude of the explosion and after dozens of tests by the USA and Russia back in the late 50' and early 60', they have determined that a 300 miles high detonation would be the most effective. If the explosion is within the atmosphere or too far out in space then there would be little to no EMP effect. This is due to the way an EMP is formed, our Magnetosphere is the key for an EMP to be effective here. The strength of the magnetosphere at the moment of the explosion is another factor.

:EMP3:

I will now go into details regarding the actual formation of an EMP.
Nuclear EMPs creates a complex multi-pulses and are made up of 3 components and they are called E1, E2 and E3.

The E1 pulse occurs very fast, in the order of nanoseconds, and is produced when gamma radiation from the detonation knocks electrons out of atoms in the upper atmosphere. the free electrons then travel in a downward direction at close to the speed of light but here is where the magic happens. As the electrons travel downwards they are captured by Earth's magnetic field and are re-directed in a right angle flow, following the magnetosphere field lines.
This causes the EMP to "spread" out a lot further than in the absence of a magnetic field. In short, the interaction with the Earth's magnetic field produces a very large but very brief electromagnetic pulse over the affected area. This is known as the Compton effect and the results are devastating for even the most shielded electronic apparatuses.

E1 can be measured in the order of hundreds of KeV's (100,000 electron volts plus) and up to 2 MeV (million electron volts) which was achieved in a 1.44 megaton experimental detonation back in 1962 in the high-altitude test code named "Operation fishbowl"

The E2 pulse is generated by scattering gamma rays produced by the weapon neutrons. It lasts a bit longer and behaves like lightning therefore lighting protection devices have a better chance to do their intended jobs. The main problem is the fact that E2 immediately follows E1 which may have already damaged surge protection devices thus leaving the door wide open for E2 to destroy the protected apparatuses.

:EMP2:

The E3 pulse is quite different from the first 2, it is very slow and can last 100's of seconds due to it moving the Earth magnetic field out of the way, followed by its restoration to its natural place.
E3 acts like a Geomagnetic storm and induces currents in long electrical conductors such as high voltage wires and transformers.

:powergr2:

Remember when North Korea conducted those underground tests and US intelligence detected only low yield nuclear explosion? In the order of 3-5 kilotons?
Some engineers thought they were failed nuclear detonations but other suspected that they actually were “Super EMP's".

Again, I reiterate that to produce an EMP large enough to disable a nation, bigger is not necessarily better. North Korea has only to launch 1 of these in orbit and then guide it above the USA and its game over.

Here is an old article I found that substantiates my claim.

“Super EMP” Capable of Disabling Power Grid Across Lower 48 States.

"For many years U.S. Intelligence agencies believed that North Korea’s nuclear weapons program was a failure due to the low explosive yield of their tests. According to EMPact America’s President and former

CIA nuclear weapons analyst Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, this is not the case: North Korea’s last round of tests, conducted in May 2009, appear to have included a “super-EMP” weapon,
capable of emitting enough gamma rays to disable the electric power grid across most of the lower 48 states,
says Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, a former CIA nuclear weapons analyst and president of EMPact America, a citizens lobbying group."

Vacuum tubes are safe from EMP, so you might want to learn about them...also your microwave oven is a Faraday cage which can protect from an EMP, although you will probably not have any warning...

I'm buying a book soon called 'One Second After', its about a man and his survival as soon as the emp hits. It was recommended that all Americans read it since it could very well happen, and gives some good survival tips.

Not like you might think.

If you are in an area with a good cell phone signal, put your cell phone in the microwave oven, then close the door and call that phone.

What I found was that the phone began to ring.....so radiation was getting thru...

There's a reason why people with pacemakers aren't supposed to be near a microwave...EMPs are nasty, but any protection is better than no protection.
 Quoting: BRIEF

Microwave oven may not be adequate protection against EMP. Doors usually have holes in it and a thin layer of conductive shield. Definitely it's better than nothing, but not the choice when preparing in advance.

Vacuum tubes have heating wires that would be melted easily.

There was a thread about protection.

We were told this satellite was 'tumbling out of control' and it 'would de-orbit in a few days' after it's 12-12-12 launch date.

Well... 3 Months later 13-13-13 and it's still orbiting at an optimal average height for maximum EMP damage.

I think the USA should MAKE SURE that fucking 'satellite' MALFUNCTIONS and de-orbits over the middle of the ocean and make sure that EVERY FUCKING 'SATELLITE' the Norks launch ever again meets it's same inexplicable malfunctioning fate. To leave it in orbit is allowing the EMP killshot to happen.

After the Norks official nuclear threats, they no longer have the right to space exploration of any means EVER.

Stop falling into the fear mongering of people that do not understand anything by people that understand almost nothing about an EMP.

Not EVERYTHING will croak. Many things will. anything that has a very long wire attached to it. Many things plugged into your electrical outlets will get roasted. Most things will not. The MOVs will stop it.

But, what will happen is transformer dialectric perforation.

KABOOM! Many line transformers (that big tin can strapped to the power pole outside your home) will do something between smoke and explode.

The grid *WILL* bit the dust. If you've got a generator you can fire it up and go with it. But, be aware, many things that were plugged in may not work even if they were off. It will depend greatly only the makeup of the electrical system in your livingspace.

Its very much like a superbolt near strike only it will come from everywhere.

Cars and trucks may or may not run after they EMP is over. Depending on if its running or not, where its parked, etc. In most cases, though, I'd expect your vehicle to be fine.

Your cell phone won't be OK, though! The tower it used to talk to will be toast. The phone itself will be fine but it will have nothing to talk to. The internet will be fried. The telephone lines will be fried.

So, stop the handwringing and figure out how you're going to live without grid power. It can be done, but, you have to think about it.

You fear mongerers are just pissing me off...

The fact is, the grid going down would be bad enough. We don't need any more fear than that. Your transistor radio will be fine. ...of course there won't be a single station on-air to listen to but the radio will be fine. It would take them years to reconstitute the grid. In the chaos that would insue, its hard to imagine what would happen. I have an idea and its not good.

But, you don't need to store your walkie-talkie in a ammo can. Sheoples is so dumb.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 851753

Not fear mongering...just informing.

People that know of possibilities and prepare, don't fear. Preparation for the possibility of something bad happening (pick you own suspected doomage) is just as much mental as physical prep.

Me; I think the possibility of an EMP or solar induced catastrophy are not out of the realm of possibility, along with financial collapse, or maybe some viral outbreak. Some people think nuclear doom or peak oil is going to get us. Either way, have a plan and don't worry. If nothing ever brings society to a halt, great! I'd much rather have piece of mind and comfort and no doom on top of that! But until we discover there is no doom, I have piece of mind.

cheers
