In a ghastly demonstration of Red, White and Blue cruelty, a mentally ill prisoner within the Maine prison system was completely bound, sprayed in the face with a crowd control chemical agent, and then a mask put over his face for more than 20 minutes, as viewed in the video below.
The incident occurred in 2012 but was first revealed to the public in an article published by the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram this week. The prisoner, who the prison reportedly medicates for his mental condition every four hours, was being non-compliant regarding the prison staff's demands to allow medical personnel to dress a self-inflicted flesh wound. The prisoner, Paul Schlosser III, was protesting what he considered overdue medication.
In response to his protests, prison Captain Shawn Welch summoned an armored reaction team. When faced with overwhelming force, Schlosser complied and knelt with his hands behind his back, facing away from the cell door. The Correctional Emergency Response Team subdued Schlosser without incident. Then, Schlosser was bound in a wheelchair and carted into a nearby room where Welch shot the prisoner in the face, point blank, with Oleoresin Capsicum (pepper) spray and has a CERT team member cover Schlosser’s mouth and nose, for more than 20 minutes. A state investigator reported the canister Welch used was designed to spray a crowd at approximately 20-feet. Captain Welch was initially fired, then reinstated.
This is how our "justice system" treats our mentally ill.
