I commend you for doing your best at trying to find a cause. You switch main food source after they got sick by chance to see if it had anything to do with their intake? To many “poison” foods out there right now and the vet will be reluctant to diagnose it as a cause in any way shape or form.

GL OP!

I cook for them - so we eat the same food they eat - chicken and organic grass fed beef, eggs, organic vegies, things like that.

This is true - family members have to ask what is dog food and what is people food - I just tell them "does it really matter? " I just made some doggy treats yesterday - my daughter ate them unknowingly and is still eating them - I just laugh and laugh...

Re: BE ALERT FOR THE SIGNS - All 3 of my dogs have a "virus" signs to observe - vet has no clue other than Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis UPDATE
I just spent the last 3 days at the vet with my Miniature Dachshund. I had every test run for parasites, from A to Z, X-rays to rule out obstruction and 2 days at the vet clinic with constant observation and IV fluids.

My dog had blood in her runny stools, and was vomiting a white foamy puke and was drooling.

Every test imaginable has been done on her and it has now been concluded that she has a virus $1500.00 later....

This is also confirmed because now my other 2 dogs are now displaying the same symptoms.

I live in a very secluded area and my dogs only go out in a fenced in area to play and walk. I have tried to keep them separated as much as possible, but apparently this virus is highly contagious.

My dogs are always up to date on their shots and have had their heart worm medications on a regular basis.

I cook for my dogs, so there is no chance of them being sick from the dog food.

AGAIN - signs to look for
1. Drooling and foamy vomit
2. Diarrhea and runny stools
3. Blood in stools
4. Lethargic

My Dachshund is feeling some better today, but the other 2 dogs are now starting with the same symptoms.

There is no anemia associated with this? Correct? Virus or toxin would be my guess. Make sure that your vet did a simple blood smear/stain to look at the RBC's, WBC's, and platelets. Very simple test that's often over looked. a smear takes about five minutes to make and read. This will allow you to see the morphology of the RBC's, what stages the WBC's are in, Blood parasites, and platelet condition.

Why would antibiotics heal a virus? The secondary infection? If it's rampant then why no name per your vet?
 Quoting: KarinZa

Because they are trying to cover for every type of infection that could be a possible cause of the sickness.

Calling it a "virus" is just the vet giving it a label because he has no idea what it is.
 Quoting: Watching the world

Yes the vet called it a stomach virus and it has been running rampant here in South Carolina... The sad part the vet said it could be caught by people... No name for the bug... It causes the dog to vomit and white foam from it's mouth... Had two dogs to catch it... One Died One Lived... The one that lived died for a few seconds just stopped breathing... Gave him some help and he recovered with what ever the vet gave out... It has happened to a number of my friends also... I gave them the same advice... Their dogs lived... Without the antibiotics the dog does not have much of a chance...

Antibiotics will not kill a virus silly.. In cases like this antibiotics are given out b/c we are unsure of what the exact cause of the problem is. If it's a virus, then the antibiotics will do nothing. The virus has to run its course, and the immune system must handle it. If it's some strange bacteria then the antibiotics my help depending on type of bacteria.

The "Swicher mop" is toxic...animals lick their paws and ingest the chemicals from the "clean floor".
Do you use such products?

Any chance some bird of prey dropped a poisoned rodent onto your yard and they slurped it up before you saw it? I'm just grasping at straws here.

Sounds airborne, and that's the worst thing possible for all our furkids.

You don't have a rhody bush at your house do you? I ask because I just had a herd of goats break into the neighbors yard and eat a bunch of his rhody bush, luckily I only lost one. They were foaming at the mouth after and very lethargic.

Could they have come in contact with a fish that was from the West coast (ocean or river.) ? I almost lost my doxie from Salmon poisoning once, because she stole a fish head from a cat, who was given it by a family member after he returned from a fishing trip.

Please let us know if you figure it out. I have 3 doxies at home, and I want to be able to keep my furbabies safe.

When my cat was showing urinary problems I pulverized Acidophilus, squeezed out a cranberry pill, opened Echinacea, PauD'Arco tabs, put in a ziplock with her dry food, shook till covered, she was better in no time.

antibiotics dont kill virus but colloidal silver does.
I would research hemorrhagic gastroenteritis and colloidal silver. The higher level virus that CS doesnt kill, colloidal gold probably will...

and cs is cheaper than antibiotics
it kills more than antibiotics - bacteria, virus, fungus, microbials
and you can make it yourself

but most vets turn their nose up at it

Make sure to keep your canines hydrated. IV fluids would be the best. If that is not an option, your vet should give you IV fluids to administer SQ (subcutaneously) Metronidazole (GI antibiotic, and cerinia (antiemetic) would also be advised.
When recovering from HGE make sure to feed a bland diet. Boiled chicken and white rice, or you could pick up ID from your vets. office.
