My dog just had this, too. Bloody diharrea, lethargic. I gave him some antibiotics we had on hand and that seemed to fix him right up. I have already been through that expensive testing thing a number of times with vets and now try to solve things myself. Like you I watch his food and he wasn't eating anything new or different. But I had just taken him to a different groomer, and that was one day before he got sick. I think he got whatever it was at that groomers. He will not be going back there again.

Sounds like canine Parvovirus. There is also a human Parvovirus. The canine strain showed up in the late 70's, especially way up North for some strange reason. There is a vaccine but any decent intelligent vet will tell you it is worthless.

I was a little late with the advice, but I'm glad other folks are smartening up. Colloidal silver will in the next few months be very important.... just sayin...

That doesn't sound too good, hope your dogs stay well and recovers alright. Did they tell you exactly what the virus was or how the first one could have caught it?

Any chance your dogs have been treated recently with the flea preventative, Comfortis? Our two dogs had never been sick (age 13.5 years). They both came down with gastroenteritis after the first treatment, but the vet didn't connect the dots. After the second treatment, one of our dogs died--again of gastroenteritis. Hope your loved ones are well and happy soon. Good luck.

In the meantime, I recommend that if one's dogs must be treated with a flea preventative, your best bet is to use one of the topical (between the shoulders) treatments.

PLEASE! Flea treatments are all toxic and dangerous to our animals... how about a plain old bath? Flea products are basically insecticides... would you spray yourself with raid? Why can't people look at things logically and not at the convenience. It's more trouble to bath the animals than to put poison on their bodies which is absorbed through the skin and into their livers.... when will people smarten up???

Sounds like parvo. They can get this from sniffing the ground as it is dormant for years. The vet may tell you it is incurable however it is not. Go to the local feed store and buy some antibiotic and a syringe. Give the dog two injections a day for a week. Also feed them gatoraid to replace their electrolites. Feed them Yogurt, this will stimulate their stomach to grow back the folicules that line their stomach and tears their food apart for digestion. What parvo does is kills those flicules and the dog starts a slow dying process. If you start treatment early chances of survival are good. If the dog is already going blind (clouding of the eyes) chances start dropping.

Flea treatments burned the fur right off of my cats neck - maybe the dog ate snails or slugs which are VERY bad for them!

My first thought when I saw the thread title was get some colloidal silver down their throats STAT! Buy a giant bottle of Sovereign Silver at the health food store asap for immediate dosing, and also get yourself a c.s. generator so you don't spend your retirement nest egg on the expensive store bought c.s.

Sounds exactly like the virus my dog had last summer. He is a very tough dog and I was worried he was going to die by the way this affected him. Than after about six days he was fine. Didn't eat or socialize just laid down off by himself. Going to the vet on day three seemed to scare him into recovery lol.

My dogs love coconut oil. They will beg for it if I'm using it. I've never seen them so excited about a food as much as they do when they see the coconut oil for some reason.
I haven't read the whole thread but a lot of people are saying Beneful is making their dogs sick and killing them. Hope your dog will be okay now.

Airborne Virus and probably a intestinal virus which is highly contagious. Your vet should have been able to identify the actual virus so I am not sure why he/she did not.

I also have three miniature long haired dachshunds. My boy had similiar symptoms about a year ago. As it turned out,
he'd eaten something that tore his intestine. Then an infection set in. He was bleeding internally and surgery saved his life. I know it is a different diagnosis for your wee ones but I just wanted to say hey to a fellow Dashie owner.

Thumbs up for coconut oil! I posted recently in a coconut oil thread about how I've been giving it to my dogs, oh for maybe the last 6 months or so. They get a teaspoon per 10 lbs each day in their dinner and an occasional treat of licking it plain off the spoon. They are crazy for it!

Anyway, after a long time struggling with bad skin and allergies, changing food, spending money on various shampoos and so on the coconut oil made a difference literally in 24 hours. They had various issues from dry, flaky skin, itchy rash, dandruff, ringworm, thin, patchy coat, etc. One is elderly and it has helped her joints tremendously - she gets around now like the clock rolled back 5 years! Amazing!

Bonus: It also helps with their breath.

As an aside, my teen has been using it on her skin as a moisturizer and her skin is the clearest and loveliest it's ever been.

News flash..your dog got better because it was on IV fluids for 2 days and it got medicine/monitoring to balance its GI flora, ulcers, reduce stomach acid, etc. Thank your Vet because he/she saved your pets life.

Next time it happens don't take them to the vet, try it your new “holistic” way only and update us then.

I know it’s hard to believe, but there is a reason Veterinarians go to college for 8 years and it’s not to “rip” people off, its to help animals.

Whether it is human or veterinary medicine, it is still “practicing” medicine:
1. There is not a test, be it blood, urine, stool that will tell your vet/doc exactly what is wrong. BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION IN MEDICINE-BLOOD TEST DON’T TELL YOU EVERYTHING.

2. Secondary symptoms are extremely common with primary symptom, ie: you drool when you’re nauseous. Also, do you know what caused your last bout with diarrhea? It could have been something eaten, bug/germ, stress…see my point.

3. People think they are their dogs greatest “savior” b/c they cook food for them, are you a nutritionist? Do you know how much fat/calories that you are giving your pet with your home-made meals? You could have given them pancreatitis and that could have caused all your symptoms. I know people who feed only chicken and rice and think it’s the greatest but their dogs are missing out on a lot of key nutrients. Good dog food companies formulate their foods to be balanced-something most people (unless you’re a canine nutritionist) cannot do.

4. There are so many differentials out there that could have caused your dogs to get sick, do you know what made you sick the last time you had a cold? Can you pin-point it to the germy door knob you touched, maybe the restaurant you ate at or the germ factories that go to day care 40 hours a week? No, you just know that you “got sick.” Same with your dogs, they could have ate a bug, a weed, dog poop, licked the kitchen floor, ate food that you cooked for them, there are thousands of things that could have got them sick.

Sorry to rant but the simple fact is your vet fixed/saved your animals life-thank them and let them know you appreciate all the hard work they did.

I see your point here, but actually my other 2 dogs DID NOT get fluids from the vet.

My spouse is a physician so I understand where you are coming from - but this time, the homeopathic methods seemed to work better.
