My bad, you're almost right...it's been awhile since I read them..
The stand WAS before 'eyes'..
BUT
King wrote "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" while he was still in college.... he expanded it into the dark tower novels later.

It was Robert Browning....but he did start writing the gunslinger in college based on that poem....sorry, I haven't slept in awhile.  No worries...and I probably won't sleep much tonight given the crazy storm pushing through. It's hitting here right now...LOL. you NE texas also?
